Stories are shared in many ways. They are described in books and magazines. They are read around the campfire at night. They are randomly distributed from stand-alone booths. But what else?
To revive (复兴)literature in the era of fast news and smartphone addiction, Short Edition, a French publisher of short-form literature, has set up more than 30 story dispensers (分发机)in the USA in the past years to deliver fiction at the push of a button at restaurants, universities and government offices.
Francis Ford Coppola, the film director and winemaker, liked the idea so much that he invested in the company and placed a dispenser at his Cafe Zoetrope in San Francisco. Last month public libraries in some other cities announced they would be setting them up, too. There is one on the campus at Penn State. A few can be found in downtown West Palm Beach, Fla. And Short Edition plans to announce more, including at the Los Angeles International Airport.
“Everything old is new again," said Andrew Nurkin, the director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, which is one of the libraries that set up the dispensers. “We want people to be easily exposed to literature. We want to advance literacy among children and inspire their creativity.
Here's how a dispenser works: It has three buttons on top indicating choices for stories that can be read in one minute, three minutes or five minutes. When a button is pushed, a short story is printed. The stories are free. They are chosen from a computer category of more than 100,000 original submissions by writers whose works have been evaluated by Short Edition's judges, and transmitted over a mobile network. Offerings can be tailored to specific interests, like children's fiction or romance. Short Edition gets stories for its category by holding writing contests.
Short Edition set up its first booth in 2016 and has 150 machines worldwide. “The idea is to make people happy," said Kristan Leroy, director of Short Edition, “There is too much unhappiness today. ”
1.What do we know about the stories sent by dispensers?
A.They are expensive.
B.They are short in form.
C.They can be read on smartphones.
D.They are mainly taken from magazine literature.
2.Where can you find the popularity of story dispensers in America?

For many of us, printed books are satisfying in ways beyond the words they contain. Billions of printed books have been published, read and saved in the 600 years since movable type was invented, so why mess with a good things?
Sony Electronics is doing just that, betting that readers will be won over by the convenience of readability of its new electronic book devices. Sony's reader, the PRS-505, can hold 160 books in its fixed memory, enough to line the shelves on a good-sized wall in the average American home. The $299 device is about the size of a paperback book, but a half-inch thick and weighs less than a pound.
The Sony book reader is revolutionary not only in its storage capacity. The font(字体) is highly readable and adjustable by size. Unlike laptop computers, you can put the Sony in your purse, read it in direct sunlight and even bookmark the pages. And you can connect it to your PC to download books.
Surprisingly, though the reader has liberated the book from paper, electronic books aren't always a bargain. For example, David Baldacci's "Stone Cold" download retails(零售) for $15.19 at the Sony site, while Amazon(卓越网) will deliver a hard copy to your mailbox for $16.19.
The Sony reader also lets you store and play or display music. So what's not to like about the Sony? Well, for many bibliophiles, a lot. Book lovers like to have, hold and keep their volumes, which don't need charging. You can write notes in the margins, and enjoy the ambience they provide on your book shelves. The need for electronic reading devices is likely to grow as more people worried about the billions of tons of paper used for printed material. Many believe the time will come when devices like the Sony reader are as common as printed newspapers and magazines today.
1.According to the passage, the Sony book reader _________.
A. is as light as a laptop computer
B. can hold more than 200 books
C. is convenient to carry around
D. cannot be connected to a PC
2.What is the author’s point when he mentions “Stone Cold”?

In the book I’ve been reading lately, “On Living” by Kerry Egan, she shares so many powerful stories — each story a parting gift from a hospice (救济院) patient who never knew when a newly arriving might be their last.
What a profound (深刻的) way to live! In a sense, I guess we all live that way, each and every day. But as I read this book, I get the feeling that only hospice patients really know this. Sometimes I realize it, like when I am faced with a choice to work more to earn more money or to go to spend the day with a loved one and earn no money. On the one hand, money, income, rent. On the other hand, love, connection, moments that make life feel like worth living for.
Near the end of “On Living,” Egan shares a story about a patient she calls Linda. Events from decades past were preserved in their mind like precious heirlooms(传家宝), but a new face could be forgotten in as little time as it took to leave the room and return again.
Linda said that she spent her days trying to be caring. She shared: We shower so much love on babies and children. But as we grow up, it stops. No one showers love on grown-ups. Life gets harder, not easier, but we stop loving each other so much, just when we need love most. She then went on to say: One day, when I was lying here, I realized how God is. He is so old. He must need so much love. People are always demanding so much from him, but who is there to shower him with love? So I thought that was something I could do. That’s what I do all day: I try to love God....I can lie here and love God and maybe it will help him.
This is the kind of story that I find impossibly inspiring and provides great impetus for me to make a change. Luckily, I read it on one of the former and it made me realize that there is always a way to help. There is always something we can do. We don’t have to be brave, able-bodied or even of particularly sound(健全的) mind to contribute to the good. We can be caring. We can love. We can be the very love that we need.
1.According to the author, most people ________.
A. give up love to earn income or money
B. seldom go to care for hospice patients
C. are faced with a very difficult choice in life
D. ignore the fact that life is short and precious
2.Linda talked about God to indicate that ________.
A. all people should love God
B. God teaches us to love all people
C. the older one is, the more he/she needs love
D. only hospice patients know they should love God
3.What does the underlined word “impetus” mean?
A. Convenience. B. Motivation.
C. Chances. D. Suggestions.
4.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Kindness is always the strongest power.
B. We can make a great difference to others.
C. We should be brave enough to love others.
D. Whatever kind of person we are, we can be caring.

The stories we share with one another are important. They show wisdom, and provide inspiration. They are important to our development. But sometimes people chose not to tell.
Consider the negative effects of not sharing a story in the news: People are wondering if public health officials are holding back too much information about the recent outbreak of Ebola.
There is a danger in holding back stories that ought to be told. Bobette Buster said it like this, “The fact is, history has shown us that stories not told an become like a dangerous genie(妖怪)left in a bottle. When they are finally uncorked, their power to destroy is set free.”
There are a number of reasons why we hide parts of our story: they often show our weaknesses or expose our disadvantages; they require courage and strength to share; and of course, there are some stories that should be kept secret—especially those that embarrass someone else.
Most of us have two selves: the one we display on the outside and the one we actually are on the inside. And the better we get at hiding the stories that show our true selves, the more damage we may be causing to ourselves and to others.
Honesty and openness is important: It proves we are trustworthy. It displays we are human. We are not perfect or better. It highlights the importance of hard work and personal development. Hard work may not allow us to overcome our disadvantages completely. But with hard wonk: we do not have to be restricted to our mistakes.
Does this mean we admit every weakness, every disadvantage, and every secret regret to everybody we meet? No, of course not. There is a time and a place and a certain level of relationship necessary for some stories to be told in all appropriate manners.
1.What’s the function of the example in Paragraph 2?
A. It reflects that people are concerning about the spread of Ebola.
B. It shows the bad effect caused by sharing a story.
C. It proves not sharing a story can cause trouble.
D. It concludes that one should share a story at a proper time.
2.One of the reasons why people are unwilling to share experiences is that______.
A story-sharing highlights the importance of hard work
B. people are used to exposing their weaknesses
C. people sometimes have no courage to share their stories
D. some stories make themselves feel sad
3.Which is close in meaning to the underlined word “uncorked” in Paragraph 3?
A. freed B. broken
C. unfolded D. untouched
4.The writer aims to convince us to_____________.
A. be open to people close to you by sharing some secrets
B. share stories appropriately for the good of others and ourselves
C. remove the dangers that can be caused by untold stories
D. realize the importance of being honest when making friends
