Tyler was enrolled in my senior class for a semester. He had impulse-control (克制冲 动)and anger management issues. He had been suspended(停课)many times in previous years. When he entered my class, I assumed the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked in the front of the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a glib(未经思考的)answer. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at the least motivate them to sit quietly and attentively. By contrast, Tyler was just loud and offensive.
He had been in so much trouble through the years. He expected his teachers to know about his referrals(移交)where he was sent to the office, and suspensions, where he was given compulsory days to stay out of school. I had rarely found referrals to be effective because students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. In the middle of the lesson, I said in the same tone of voice, “Tyler, why don't you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?" With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can't remember what he said other than that he included several impolite words. I sent Tyler to the office with a discipline referral , and he received a week's out — of — school suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler's anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was out of school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.
On the day of Tyler's return, I stood at the door awaiting him.

But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build Jayce‘s confidence.
“It reassured me," said Lewis. “I know in my heart that everything's going to be OK. Trashaun has grown up to be a wonderful kid. And I know Jayce is too."
Trashaun did get serious with Jayce. Finally, the boys met at Washington Middle School on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months later, in April 2017, and they instantly bonded.

The Johnsons would not have survived if not for Bella.
Johnson suffered a head injury and his wife had broken ribs, but they soon set about searching for their beloved heroic dog. They left pieces of clothing around the destroyed neighborhood, hoping that Bella would recognize the scent and find her way back home. Church friend and dog tracker Sarah Romeyn also joined in.
She borrowed cameras from a local animal rescue group and set them up in areas where people reported seeing her. She also worked with other dog trackers and even sought tips from residents with the help of the Putnam County Police Department.
When leads dried up, the Johnsons and Romeyn pressed on. “I was still finding time searching in parking lots, but it was tough. Because nobody had found a body, in rescue you can’t give up until you know you don’t have a positive outcome. And I hadn’t given up,” Romeyn said.

I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that summer. Sometimes she sold me an old newspaper instead of one that was the latest. Sometimes she overcharged me and didn’t seem embarrassed when I pointed it out. Going to the store was more like going into battle, but I survived. By summer’s end the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes. The morning I was to return to Brooklyn, I stopped in to get a soda.

“Oh, Honey,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”

Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.

Danger at Scituate Lighthouse

Besides, Rebecca thought as she watched her father set off, the family would soon starve if he didn’t go for food.
Her father hadn’t been gone long when Rebecca happened to look out the window at the ocean. What she saw nearly made her heart stop. It was an enemy ship: a small, light-gunned British warship. Calling for her mother, she grabbed her father’s telescope and could just make out the name painted on the side: La Hogue.
Rebecca, Abigail, and their mother stood together, frightened, as they watched the ship sail closer. Mother told the girls to watch the ship while she tried to sound the alarm and warn the home guard in the nearby village. The girls watched helplessly as the great ship drew near. Two small boats were lowered off the side, and Rebecca knew the boats would come ashore quickly.
It was time to run. As they ran down the lighthouse stairs, Rebecca suddenly stopped when she saw her fife(横笛). Oh my! She thought. It just might work… Rebecca grabbed the fife and the drum(鼓) that Abigail had been learning to play.
