After the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill aimed at retaliatory(报复的) action against China for its “significantly undervalued” currency, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner urged the IMF to pressure China to adopt “more flexible, more market-directed exchange-rate management”. This is a coded message to China: You’re keeping on purpose your currency cheap, and the U.S. economy is paying the price. So cut it out --- or else. The normally dull IMF meeting became the latest battleground for the U.S. to be against a fast developing China.
Our new conventional wisdom is that China’s policy leads to make trade deficits (逆差) greater and the loss of American jobs. Dozens of candidates have run ads attacking a competitor for allowing China to take advantage of us. In the election-year view, China grew 10% annually for the past decade while maintaining low inflation(通涨) only by taking advantage of its artificially low currency. The idea that the U.S. is not responsible for its own economy is a black-is-white view. It argues that China and its currency are causing the lion’s share of harm.
This is an argument born of fear. It covers a fact that the economies of China and the U.S. have become beneficial to each other. Those trillions in reserves that China accumulates: Where do they go? Back to the U.S. in the form of lending money to the federal government. Those made-in-China goods that account for the trade deficit: Whom do they benefit? China, yes, but also American consumers and companies. Without China, American companies could not have maintained their profitability in recent years. Take two brand names, Caterpillar and Nike. Both have their products made in China, but both also view China as a fast-growing market for their products.
George Soros warned recently that a currency war could put the world into disorder more damaging than anything caused by the financial crisis of the 1930s. He’s right. Whether we like it or not, we live in a global system. The zero-sum attitude toward China and its currency is a relic, the remaining of an earlier time when nations defined economic life.
China is far from perfect and seeks its own advantage, but holding it accountable for our domestic problems is beyond outdated. It reflects a dangerous refusal to deal with the world as it is. Retaliating against China over currency will not regain high-end jobs in the U.S., which needs more our own demand. It will not renew construction or retool the American labor force. It will not rebuild rotting bridges or create a next-generation energy network.
1.Which of the following argument can be supported by the writer?
A. China is the winner in the Sino-US trade.
B. China’s rapid development over the past ten years is based on its low inflation.
C. The world’s economy will benefit from China’s policy changes on its currency.
D. The US will get hurt if it tries hard on damaging China’s economy.
2.This passage is in a tone that is ____________.
A. in favor of China
B. in the shoes of US
C. blaming China’s low currency policy
D. helping IMF solve the world’s economic problem
3.The writer makes his point of view clear through the passage by using _____________.
A. reasonable analysis
B. leaders’ quotations
C. figure examples
D. moving stories
4.China’s currency policy ________.
A. will help increase the demand in the US
B. is unable to equip the American labor force with new working skills
C. could guide the world economy for the next decade
D. is to be controlled by the international currency groups

Since it first opened after four years of construction in 1937 at a cost of $27 million, the Golden Gate Bridge has made its appearance in films and poetry.
CNN Travel spent a day climbing into and ground the bridge, learning these secrets from the people who know and love it best.
Why is it called the Golden Gate Bridge? It’s not golden.
“The Golden Gate Bridge gets its name because it spans what is called the Golden Gate Strait,”said Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz,spokesman for the Golden Gate Bridge,Highway and Transportation District, which operates the bridge. It’s a three-mile-long and one-mile-wide body of water that connects the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco Bay.
What color is the bridge? It looks red.
“It’s not red, although you’re not crazy to think so. Visitors all call it red,”said Russell. “Back in the day,the US Navy, then part of the War Department, oversaw the waterways and wanted to paint this bridge black and yellow for high visibility,”said fellow painter Jarrod Bauer. “They ended up mixing paint to create the color International Orange, which is similar to the color of red lead,”he said.
Does the bridge get entirely painted every year?
No,and it doesn’t need to be. It’s true that the top coat has been fully repainted over time with new and environmentally-improved International Orange top coats.
Who performs bridge rescues?
McVeigh and his fellow ironworkers, the so—called“Cowboys of the Sky”,have that responsibility. McVeigh has lost count of how many troubled souls he’s been called to rescue over the past 17 years.
In September in 2018,the bridge started constructing a suicide(自杀)prevention system, also known as the safety net,to keep people from jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s expected to be completed in 2021.
1.What’s the true color of the Golden Gate Bridge?
A.Red. B.Red lead.
C.Black and yellow. D.International Orange.
2.Who can probably be called a hero on the Golden Gate Bridge?
A.McVeigh. B.Jarrod Bauer.
C.Russell. D.Paolo.
3.What can we know about the Golden Gate Bridge?
A.It is safer now because of the safety net.
B.It got its name because of its color.

D.It needs to be repainted once a year.

Two hundred years after Charles Darwin’s birth, studies have found new details of his life at the University of Cambridge. Six leather-bound ledgers(皮革账本) discovered in the university show this. 1.
He lived in the most expensive rooms provided for a rich student at his time. 2. He had someone to clean his room, make his bed and take care of the fire in his bright rooms. He hired a dishwasher, a clothes washer and a man who cleaned his shoes. A tailor(裁缝), hatter and barber made sure he was well presented. A chimney cleaner and a coalman kept his fire going. Christ’s College’s basic food was meat and beer. 3.
4. Later he described this time as the most joyful of his happy life. That large sum(金额) would have been fairly common for a student at Cambridge in the 19th century. The bills were paid by his wealthy father, Robert Darwin, a doctor.
In those days Cambridge was full of rich students living a pretty good life and Darwin was just one of them. Thanks to the richness, he was able to hire servants to help with the daily life. 5. He would be out shooting, collecting beetles, doing his scientific hobbies or visiting friends. He played cards and drank wine at night, just like students always have.
A. And thus he had plenty of time for socializing or private study.
B. The findings were published on the Internet.
C. So he paid five and a half pence extra each day to have vegetables.
D. He had several people to help him to deal with the daily housework.
E. He enjoyed the kind of comfortable university life that most of today’s students can only dream about.
F. When you look at the ledgers, you can find there were many rich students in Cambridge.
G. Darwin’s bill topped 636 pounds during his three years of study at Cambridge.

Find a quiet location. Keep a routine. Focus on one subject at a time. It all seems like sound advice for students who need to hit the books, but recent studies indicate the conventional wisdom is all wrong.
Here's a list of tips from Carey, a sc ientist, for getting the most out of your study time:
Test yourself:Doing practice quizzes can help you retrieve information on test day. “Tests have a very bad reputation as a measurement tool,” Carey says. But psychologists have found self-tests slow down the forgetting of material you've studied. “If you study something once, and then you test yourself on it,” Carey says, “you do better than if you study it twice over.”
Move around: Changing up where you study can help you retain more information. “If you move around and study the same material in several places,” he says, “you may be forming…multiple associations for the same material, the same words and so on. So it's better organized in your brain, and you can pull it out easier.”
Mix it up:Think about a football player who does strength training, speed training and drills. Carey says alternating between different facets of a subject in a single sitting can “leave a deeper impression on the brain”. For example, when studying French, do some verbs, some speaking and some reading. Spending your time in deep concentration on just verbs, say, isn't as effective.
Space it out:Information learned in a hurry is lost just as fast. Carey lik es cramming your brain to speed-packing a cheap suitcase—it all falls out. So if you really want to learn, space out shorter, hour-long study sessions. “There's no doubt you can cram your way through an exam,” Carey says. The problem is that it's so easy to forget what you just crammed—and once it's gone, Carey says, “It's gone. You're not getting it back.”
Of course, nothing can replace the power of motivation and discipline. But Carey says the overall message is encouraging:“Studying can sort of be incorporated into a more varied life, much more easily than we thought.”
1.According to the text, the best way to learn is ________.
A.to learn one's subject at a time in a quiet place
B.to be strongly motivated to learn something
C.to mix up everything that you will learn
D.to do self-tests after you learn immediately
2.Why are you advised to move around while learning?
A. Because it can make your brain focus on learning.
B. Because you can save time by missing the same words.
C. Because you can connect materials with different things.
D. Because it keeps your brain in a completely resting state.
3.How did the writer develop the fifth paragraph?
A.By telling an interesting story.
B.By presenting in the time order.
C.By analyzing causes and effects.
D.By making a comparison.
4.It can be inferred from what Carey said in the third paragraph that ________.
A.tests used to be treated as a tool to judge learners
B.tests would slow down your study
C.tests were the best way to learn new information
D.tests do good to you more than learning itself
