On my table sits a photograph of a young man with thick black hair and eyes dark with the depth of understanding. It is Andy, who never hurt people. If he was angry, you knew it. The violence against blacks had never stopped. In the previous seven decades, nearly 600 known killings had taken place in the state. But the reasons why part of me wanted Andy to stay were the same reasons he wanted to go. Only five percent of Mississippi’s half-million African-Americans were registered to vote in 1960.
