Chinese people are now spending more time surfing the net than watching TV, according to results of a survey by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) published Thursday.
The survey, of citizens of five Chinese cities, found that 79 percent of interviewees use the internet for information, and 55.1 percent to read news on the internet. About 63 percent of the interviewees use e-mail. The average times spent surfing the net and watching TV were 2.73 hours and 1.29hours, respectively.
Only 10.4 percent reported use the internet primarily to send and receive email; 65.9 percent read online news; 62.2 quite often play games on-line. More and more people have taken an interest in the entertainment opportunities online. Up to 56.5 percent of interviewees quite often download music, and 53.5 percent get entertainment messages from the internet.
Yet the survey found that television is still the dominant mass medium. Seventy-nine percent of interviewees choose to watch TV to get information, and another 75 percent take newspapers as important as TV.
Five major web sites in the Chinese language, namely Sina, Sohu, Netease, Baidu and Yahoo are still ranked top ones by web users, and those that voted for Sina as the best among them were 30.9 percent.
Authorized statistics showed that web users in China have already exceeded 100 million, second to that of the United States.

How many times have you heard the expression that most people spend more time planning their vacation than they do planning their lives. I would expand that expression by adding that most people spend more time "thinking" about their vacation than they do thinking about what's important in their life.
While rest and relaxation are a must in living a balanced life, it's now what we were created to do. After all, the Master Creator took his R&R (Rest and Recreation) on the seventh day, only after six days of "definitely directed thought."
Wallace D. Wattles, wrote "There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and continuous thought; it is the hardest work in the world." And yet it is the first and primary labor of achievement.
What is your life's purpose or your personal mission statement? Is it written down? Do you review it and think about it often? Is your life organized around your purpose and a set of goals that support that purpose?
Without purpose and goals --- definitely directed thought --- you are like the proverbial "shop without a rudder(舵)." There is power in your purpose and in your goals. It is the power that takes you over obstacles, the fuel that pushes you toward the life you expect.

Men are spending more and more time in the kitchen encouraged by celebrity (名人) chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver, according to a report from Oxford University.
The effect of the celebrity role models, who have given cooking a more manly picture, has combined with a more general drive towards sexual equality and men now spend more than twice the amount of time preparing meals than they did in 1961.
According to the research by Prof. Jonatahn Gershuny, who runs the Centre for Time Research at Oxford, men now spend more than half an hour a day cooking, up from just 12 minutes a day in 1961.
Prof. Gershuny said, “The man in the kitchen is part of a much wider social trend. There has been 40 years of sexual equality, but there is another 40 years probably to come.”
Women, who a generation ago spent nearly two hours a day cooking, now spend just one hour and seven minutes—a great fall, but they still spend far more time in the kitchen than men.
Some experts have named these men in aprons as “Gastrosexuals (men using cooking skills to impress friends)”, who have been inspired to pick up a kitchen knife by the success of Ramsay, Oliver as well as other male celebrity chefs such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Marco Pierre White and Keith Floyd.
“I was married in 1974. When my father came to visit me a few weeks later, I was wearing an apron when I opened the door. He laughed,” said Prof. Gershuny. “That would never happen now.”
Two-thirds of adults say that they come together to share at least three times a week, even if it is not necessarily around a kitchen or dining room table. Prof. Gershuny pointed out that the family meal was now rarely eaten by all of its members around a table—with many “family meals” in fact taken on the sofa in the sitting room, and shared by family members. “The family meal has changed a lot, and few of us eat—as I did when I was a child—at least two meals a day together as a family. But it has survived in a different format.”
1.What is one reason behind the trend that men spend more time cooking than before?
A. The improvement of cooks’ status.
B. The influence of popular female chefs.
C. The change of female’s view on cooking.
D. The development of sexual equality campaign.
2.What does the author think about the time men and women spend on cooking?
A. Men spend more time cooking than women nowadays.
B. Women spend much less time on cooking than before.
C. It will take 40 years before men spend more time at the stove than women.
D. There is a sharp decline in the time men spend on cooking compared with 1961.
3.How did Prof. Gershuny see the family meal according to the passage?
A. It has become a thing of the past.
B. It is very different from what it used to be.
C. It shouldn’t be advocated in modern times.
D. It is beneficial to the stability of the family.
4.Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The Changes of Family Meals
B. Equality between Men and Women
C. Cooking into a New Trend for Men
D. Cooking—a Thing of the Past for Women

Many parents who welcome the idea of turning off the TV and spending more time with the family are still worried that without TV they would be too often on call as entertainers(娱乐者) for their children. They remember thinking up all sorts of things to do when they were children. But their own children seem different, less good at finding things to pass the time, somehow. When there’s nothing to do, these parents notice regretfully that their children seem unable to come up with anything to do besides turning on the TV.
One father, for example, says, “When I was young, we were always thinking up things to do, projects and games. We certainly never complained in an angry way to our parents, ‘I have nothing to do”.He compares this with his own children today: “They are simply lazy.If someone doesn’t play with them, they’ll happily sit there watching TV all day.”
There is one word for this father’s disappointment: unfair. It is as if he were disappointed in them for not reading Greek though they have never studied the language. He feels his children’s lack of inventiveness a great pity, as if the ability to play were something born that his children are missing. In fact, the tendency(倾向) to play is built into the human species, but the actual ability to play—to imagine, to invent in a playful way, and the ability to gain satisfaction after successful effort from it—these are skills that have to be learned and developed.
Such disappointment, however, is not only unjust, it is also destructive(毁灭性的).Sensing their parents’ disappointment, children come to believe that they are, indeed, lacking something, and that this makes them less worthy of admiration and respect.Giving children the chance to develop new things to enjoy themselves, to enrich their knowledge and experience and discover the pleasure of doing things on their own is, on the other hand, a way to help children develop a confident(自信)feeling about themselves as able and interesting people.
1.Many people think that, instead of watching a lot of TV, their children should_______.
A.think up things to enjoy themselves B.find chances to talk with parents
C.enjoy themselves outdoors D.sit silently studying Greek
2.Fathers often blame their children for not being able to play by themselves. This is unfair because________.
A.they do not lack the ability to play
B.they have not been given the opportunities to learn and develop their ability
C.the children are too young to do that
D.the children are not really lazy, but there’s nothing for them to do
3.When parents show continuous disappointment in their children, the children will________.
A.be more disappointed
B.refuse to learn new things
C.discover the pleasures of doing things on their own
D.lose their confidence and respectability
4.What is the author’s main idea?
A.Parents should give children more help on how to be inventive.
B.Turning off the TV will help us solve a lot of family problems.
C.It’s not right for parents and children to blame(抱怨) each other.
D.Today’s children are becoming less able and independent than before.

高三英语阅读理解中等难度题查看答案及解析
Until late in the 20th century most Americans spent time with people of different generations. Now middle-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves.
That's because we group people by age.We put our three-year-olds together in day-care centers, our 13-year-olds in schools and sport activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior citizen homes. Why?
We live far away from the old for many reasons.Young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears of becoming old and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes.Sometimes it’s got hard that we stay away from the people who need us the most.
Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old.And we have discovered that they often save the young.
A reporter moved her family into a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter made banana bread for the neighbors and had her children send it and visit them.Soon the children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects."My children have never been lonely,"the reporter said.
The young,in turn, save the old.Once I was in a rest home (an organization where old people are cared for) when a visitor showed up with a baby, she was immediately surrounded.People who hadn't gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair.Even those who had seemed asleep woke up to watch the child.Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.
Grandparents are a special case. They give their grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it "My grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end." Grandchildren speak of attention they don't get from worried parents."My parents were always telling me to hurry up,and my grandparents told me to slow down," one friend said.A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer and more trusting.
1.Now in an American family, people can find that________.
A. children never live with their parents
B. not all working people live with their parents
C. old people are supported by their grandchildren
D. grandchildren are supported by their grandparents
2.Seeing a baby,the old people got excited because ________.
A. they had never seen a baby before
B. the baby was clever and beautiful
C. the baby brought them the image of life
D. the baby's mother would take care of them
3.Why are some children quieter, calmer and more trusting?
A. Because they have relationships with their grandparents.
B. Because their worried parents ask them to act like that.
C. Because they have nothing to worry about.
D. Because their teachers ask them to act like that.
4.Which of the following can show the fact that the old often save the young?
A. The old can become friends of the children and the children may not feel lonely.
B. The old get excited when they see a baby.
C. The old can cure the young when they are sick.
D. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.
