“Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” An old tale tells seemingly unbelievable story of a magic mirror, but now the magic is no longer unachievable.
In August 2018, news went viral (广为传播的) that the police had caught criminal suspects who attended Chinese singer Jacky Cheung’s concerts. How did the police pick out the suspects among thousands of screaming fans? The helping hand is Al facial recognition technology. The low-key yet powerful tool is no longer far-fetched, but entering the world of China’s top investors and companies.
Facial recognition is a technology able to identify a person from digital image or a frame from a video source. Tang Wenbin, CTO of Face++, an Al computer vision technology company in China, vividly explained the workflow. According to him, facial recognition is the identification of our appearance, including knowing the sex, age and identity of a person. You may think it is like a brain or a neural network. You use data to train it, and then, it learns the pattern.
Facial recognition technology has been traditionally allied with the security work but today there is active expansion into other industries including mobile phones, marketing and finance.
Chinese start-ups have seen the potential of AI facial recognition for simplifying and speeding up tasks in multiple industries. And the market is now crowded and competitive.
China is starting the Al revolution and has made breakthroughs in facial recognition. “If applying AI to different industries is a marathon, the companies there probably have just got off the blocks.” said Tian Feng, director of Alibaba Cloud Research Center. He also thinks that in the future, everybody will be able to use AI as it will soon become a basic tool for work and life.
1.Why does the author mention mirrors in Paragraph 1?
A.To imply that such magical mirror is achievable.
B.To lead to the topic that such magic has become reality.
C.To prove that old tales are based on true stories.
D.To describe the background of facial recognition.
2.Which of the following best explains“allied with”underlined in Paragraph 4?
A.Content with. B.Compared with. C.Burdened with. D.Associated with.
3.What is Tian Feng’s attitude towards the future of AI?
A.Favorable. B.Pessimistic. C.Indifferent. D.Objective.

When you look in the mirror, you see yourself. That puts you in the company of animals like dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees. The mirror test is often used as a way of measuring whether animals have self-awareness. And an animal that is aware of itself has a high level of intelligence. Now, a species of fish - the cleaner wrasse - has also spotted its reflection.
Alex Jordan, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one of the researchers of the study on cleaner wrasse consciousness. He and his team conducted many tests that show the fish does seem to recognize its reflection - when the researchers added a colored mark to its body, the fish would even try to remove the mark upon catching sight of it in the mirror. It seems to indicate the clever fish species has some sense of self or individuality.
But Jordan said, “I’m the last to say that the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees.” Instead, he believes that the measure scientists have used for nearly 50 years is imperfect.
One problem with the test, for example, is that it uses vision to measure self-awareness. Yet not all animals rely on sight to recognize themselves. It may well be that a bat, for example, which depends on sonar (声波定位) to get around, is self-conscious. Elephants, while able to pass the mirror test, rely more heavily on smell than on sight.
Consciousness in humans or animals is not easy to measure or understand. Philosophers and scientists have long wrestled with the questions of how a sense of self is assessed, and how it relates to physical processes. Jordan believes the cleaner wrasse is self-cognizant (自我知晓的), but not the same extent (程度) as a human. This means scientists need to reconsider whether some concepts centered on humans can be used in understanding animals.
1.The study on the cleaner wrasse made Alex Jordan .
A.doubt whether the mirror test is reliable
B.discover the secret about the fish’s sight
C.develop a better method to replace the mirror test
D.believe the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees
2.Which of the following can replace the underlined part “wrestled with” ?
A.Presented with. B.Ended with.
C.Agreed with. D.Struggled with.
3.What can we learn from the text?
A.It is relatively easy to test animals' consciousness.
B.Some concepts for humans can’t be applied to animals.
C.Animals rely on at least two senses to get to know themselves.
D.More mirror tests are needed to prove the cleaner wrasse is self-aware.

In the atmosphere, carbon dioxide acts rather like a one-way mirror the glass in the roof of a greenhouse which allows the sun's rays to enter but prevents the heat from escaping.
According to a weather expert's prediction, the atmosphere wilbe3C warmer in the year 2050thanitis today, if man continues to burn fuels at the present rate.If this warming up took place, the icecaps in the poles would begin to melt thus raising sea level several meters and severely flooding coastal cities. Also, the increase in atmospheric temperature would lead to great changes in the climate of the northern hemisphere(半球) , possibly resulting in an alteration of the earth's chief food-growing zones.
In the past, concern about a man-made warming of the earth has concentrated on the Arctic because the Antarctic is much colder and has a much thicker ice sheet. But the weather experts are now paying more attention to West Antarctic, which maybe affected by only a few degrees of warming:in other words, by a warming on the scale that will possibly take place in the next fifty years from the burning of fuels.
Satellite pictures show that large areas of Antarctic ice are already disappearing. The evidence available suggests that a warming has taken place. This fits the theory that carbon dioxide warms the earth.
However, most of the fuel is burnt in the northern hemisphere, where temperatures seem to be falling Scientists conclude, therefore, that up to now natural influences on the weather have exceeded those caused by man.The question is:Which natural cause has most effect on the weather?
One possibility is the variable behavior of the sun.Astronomers at one research station have studied the hot spots and“cold”spots(that is, the relatively less hot spots) on the sun.As the sun rotates(旋转) , every 27.5 days it presents hotter or“colder”faces to the earth, and different aspects to different parts of the earth. This seems to have a considerable effect on the distribution of the earth's atmospheric pressure, and consequently on wind circulation. The sun is also variable over along term:its heat output goes up and down in cycles, the latest trend being downward.
Scientists are now finding mutual relations between models of solar-weather interactions and the actual climate over many thousands of years, including the last Ice Age.The problem is that the models are predicting that the world should be entering a new Ice Age and it is not.One way of solving this theoretical difficulty is to assume a delay of thousands of years while the solar effects overcome the inertia(惯性) of the earth's climate. If this is right, the warming effect of carbon dioxide might thus be serving as a useful counter-balance to the sun's diminishing(减少) heat.
1.Why is the fuel consumption greater in then or them hemisphere, but temperatures there seem to be falling?
A.Mainly because the levels of carbon dioxide are rising.
B.Possibly because the output of solar energy varies.
C.Because the inertia of the earth's climate take effect.
D.Possibly because the icecaps in the poles are melting
2.On the basis of their models, scientists are of the opinion that
A.the climate of the world should be becoming cooler
B.the new Ice Age will be delayed by the greenhouse effect
C.the man-made warming effect helps to increase the solar effects
D.it will take thousands of years for the inertia of the earth's climate to take effect
3.If the assumption about the delay of a new Ice Age is correct, .
A.the best way to overcome the cooling effect would be to burn more fuels
B.ice would soon cover the northern hemisphere
C.the increased levels of carbon dioxide would warm up the earth quickly
D.the greenhouse effect could work to the advantage of the earth
4.The purpose of the article is to explain .
A.the greenhouse effect
B.the solar effects on the earth
C.the models of solar-weather interactions
D.the causes affecting weather

This time of year many of us are determined to get back into shape. But if you are having trouble fitting into your tight jeans, it may not be your fault. Scientists now believe that willpower alone is not enough to lose weight. They say success depends on your genes, hormones (荷尔蒙) and psychology.
A study of 75 people by BBC Science and Oxford and Cambridge Universities has looked into why one-size-fits-all diets are often not successful. The scientists divided over-eaters into three groups—people who feast, people who constantly crave food and emotional eaters. They tailored (定制) diets to the needs of each group.
Feasters can’t stop eating once they start. This is because they don’t have the hormones that tell them when they are full. Scientists designed a diet for this group paying special attention to high protein foods that make them feel full for a long time. This included fish, chicken, basmati rice and grains. Bread and potatoes were not allowed because they do not fill you up for long.
Constant cravers always feel hungry. Scientists say that certain genes stop the messages the stomach sends to the brain saying it is full, meaning the cravers always feel like they need more fatty, sugary food. Dieting seven days a week is very hard for these people, so scientists put them on a normal, healthy diet five days a week, and eating whenever they feel stressed. To help them change this behaviour, scientists offered them group support in meetings and online as well as a diet.
During the study, people from all three groups lost weight on the tailored diets, with feasters losing the most and constant cravers losing the least.
So what about you? If any of the eating habits sound familiar, perhaps you should consider a new approach to slimming for now.
1.What is the solution that scientists suggest for feasters?
A.Providing them with a certain hormone.
B.Designing a high-protein diet for them.
C.Reducing their calorie intake on the weekend.
D.Giving them group support in meetings and online.
2.It can be inferred from the passage that______.
A.Bread and potatoes are harder to digest than fish and chicken.
B.Anyone can lose weight only if he or she has strong determination.
C.Emotional eaters are more likely to lose weight than constant cravers.
D.Scientists will find one-size-fits-all diets for those who want to lose weight.
3.The passage is mainly about______.
A.Three factors that determine our success in getting back into shape.
B.Three approaches to losing weight according to eating habits.
C.Willpower is not enough to lose weight.
D.A research on tailored diets.
