There are probably no people on Earth who like to gossip as much as the British. If prying into(打探) other’s lives were an Olympic sport, then Team GB would surely take the gold medal.
And when the British can’t watch the lives of real people, they have another source of entertainment to fall back on—the soap opera. British soap operas are very different to US TV dramas. For one, they are normally longer running. The two most popular, Coronation Street and East-enders, have been running for 48 and 24 years respectively. Both are broadcast several times a week, so remarkably there have been more than 7,000 episodes of Coronation Street.
The most obvious difference is that, unlike US dramas, the British soap operas focus on the real world. There is little glamour (魅力), the stars are rarely rich, and they normally have boring jobs. Perhaps the appeal is that the lives of the characters often mirror the lives of the audience—but with some drama added. This means the viewer can relate to the characters and feel the pain and happiness they go through on the show.
Because these soap operas last for decades, the cast is ever changing. The shows rarely focus on one or two main characters. Like the real world, people come and go all the time. However, there are exceptions. Coronation Street’s William Roach, 76, has played the role of Ken Barlow since the very first episode of the show in 1960, and he is still a regular.
The choice of which soap opera you follow is often cultural: People from the north of British tend to watch Coronation Street as it is set in Manchester. People from the south generally prefer East-enders, which is set in the east of London. The show is generally considered grittier and is aimed at a younger audience.
1.What is the main difference between American dramas and British soap operas?
A. American dramas are longer.
B. British soap operas are longer.
C. American dramas deal with dangerous things.
D. British soap operas deal with real people.
2.Why do British people like to watch such operas?

B. They can enjoy the operas in their free time.
C. They can watch the operas for many years.
D. They care about the fate of the characters in the operas.

高三英语阅读理解简单题查看答案及解析
Much like a smartphone, your body will go to sleep when there are no new inputs. When you are on a bus, your senses will give you the same repetitive inputs. The streets will flow by, the engine adds constant white noise, you’re seated and not moving, and the smell... well you hope the smell doesn’t change.
Any repetitive input going to your brain will eventually be ignored and your brain will start going into a low energy state. The fact that you fall asleep quickly when closing your eyes on a bus is because you were already on the bus for a while and got used to all the repetitive sensory data.
When you go to bed, you have a lot of new changes. You are lying down, you wear different clothes, you feel the pressure of your covers, you go from bright to dark, noisy to quiet. All of these are new sensory inputs that your brain needs to get used to before going to sleep.
A laboratory experiment to investigate the effects of whole-body vibration (震动) on seated human alertness and sleepiness was carried out. Vibration was applied to the volunteers sitting on the vehicle seat on the vibration platform. Volunteers for this investigation included 18 young male and healthy university students. None of the volunteers had a history of neck pain, diseases of the cervical spine or musculoskeletal disorders. Seated volunteers were exposed to a Gaussian random vibration, with 1–15 Hz frequency bandwidth at 0.2 ms−2 r.m.s., for 20-minutes.
The results suggest that exposure to vibration even for 20-minutes can cause significant sleepiness. The data clearly show that exposure to vibration has considerable influence on subjective sleepiness levels, and more importantly, human reaction times and decrease of attention.
Drowsy driving has been reported to account for approximately 20% of accidents worldwide. In Australia, 16.6% of total road deaths were caused by sleep-related accidents in 1998 alone. It is well established that sleepiness caused by extended hours of driving has considerable influence on driver performance, therefore, compromising transportation safety.
These findings need to be further proved particularly in relation to driving behavior. This line of research can then assist in the development of practical and relevant guidelines for limitation of vibration exposure in the automotive industry, in an effort to reduce the burden of road accidents. That’s something for both car manufacturers and road safety experts to think about.
1.According to the passage, why do we fall asleep quickly on the bus?
A.Because we meet a lot of new changes.
B.Because the surroundings become quiet.
C.Because we get used to the repetitive sensory data.
D.Because our senses give us different kinds of inputs.
2.What is the purpose of the experiment?
A.To investigate people’s sleeping hours and situation.
B.To research whether vibration can affect people’s health.
C.To study the relationship between inputs and people’s attention.
D.To find out how shaking affects people’s sleepiness in the vehicle.
3.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Sleepy driving is the main cause of road accidents.
B.The research has helped to reduce the burden of road accidents.
C.The findings of the experiment have been recognized by road safety experts.
D.The research results can give some implications to the automobile production.
4.What is the author’s attitude towards the findings?
A.Positive. B.Negative.
C.Disappointed. D.Indifferent.

In space, there is no up or down. Without the gravity that we experience on Earth, as-tronauts and everything else on a spaceship float freely.
Humans can experience the sense of zero gravity without going into space. How?A zero-gravity flight. When an airplane flies in a lot of parabolas(抛物线), a man-made zero-gravity environment is set up. Everything in the plane floats, even passengers.
Gravity has an effect on everything from the human body and mind to the behavior of plants and the way machines run. Space travel is expensive and dangerous. But zero-gravity flights let scientists conduct experiments in an environment that mimics(模拟) the conditions of space. On each of its research trip, Zero-G flies about 30 parabolas, each of which creates a period of weightlessness that lasts about 30 seconds. Nikolaus Kuhn of the University of Ba-sel, in Switzerland, flew with Zero-G. He was conducting an experiment about soil and the flow of water on Mars. The Red Planet has about one-third of the gravity that Earth has. This means water flows more slowly on Mars. By making the parabolas less steep, zero-gravity flights can make the feeling of Martian gravity. Flying with Zero-G has been necessary for Kuhn’s research. “It is the only chance, other than going to Mars, to mimic movement of water as it would be on Mars,” he told TFK.
For years, NASA used zero-gravity flights to prepare and train astronauts. “I have not been to space,” Peters of Zero-G says, “But I have been told by astronauts that zero-gravity feels exactly the same.” As humans continue to explore the universe beyond Planet Earth, zero-gravity flights will remain an important and fun tool. “It never gets old,” Peters says “I would do it every weekend for the rest of my life if I could.”
1.Why do scientists set up man-made zero-gravity environment?
A.To study the water on the earth.
B.To offer weightlessness as a business.
C.To take scientists to any other planets.
D.To mimic the condition of space for experiments.
2.How much time of weightlessness can a Zero-G light offer?
A.About 30 seconds. B.About 90 seconds.
C.About 15 minutes. D.About 30 minutes.
3.What feature do the parabolas in Zero-G flights have?
A.The gentler parabolas are, the more satisfied the researchers are.
B.The steeper parabolas are, the less weight the passengers feel.
C.The steeper parabolas are, the more successful the experiments are.
D.The gentler parabolas are, the more quickly water on Mars flows.
4.What can be inferred about the Zero-G flight from the text?
A.It is useless for training astronauts.
B.It has no side effect on human body.
C.It creates a substitutable environment of zero gravity in space.
D.It is cheaper but more dangerous than space travel.
