[1] What does a successful language learner do? Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.
[2] First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher. Instead of waiting for teachers to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions.

If you’ve decided on a career in the media, you should be sick to death with people telling you how competitive the industries are.
But that may mean that you will find it a little disappointing when you enter a place where perhaps no one will ask you your name, or say hello to you in the morning, and where you are being perhaps not paid to do a job.
There are a number of training schemes offered across the media, which are great routes in. Simon Winder was given his start in publishing by MacMillan’s training scheme. I was sent out to Africa and Asia for a couple of years, selling educational books. It was a terrible job in many ways but interesting training,” said Winder. Because he had learnt first-hand experience about the business of publishing, his training prepared him for a career in the industry. On his return to England, Winder made the move to a senior position at Penguin seven years age.
If you can’t get on to a training scheme, or get a paid job straight away, then ______________ will open up many opportunities to you. It is all about proving that you can do the job. “Identify companies and people whose programs you like, and then simply write to them,” Cinneck advised those wanting to break into television,” Offer to work for free if you possibly can, and the chances are you will impress with your hard work and ideas, and end up staying on in paid employment. That’s how practically every employee of Ten Alps ended up with the company.
Wherever you start out, if you work hard at what you do, your efforts will be rewarded. “Don’t focus on where you want to end up,” advised Ross, “You’ll know where that is when you’re there; just stay focused on the job in hand, and do that as well as you can.”

[2]I was convinced that "I " was right and "he" was wrong--and he was just as convinced that __________ and "he" was right. The teacher decided to teach us a very important lesson. She brought us up to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other.
[3]In the middle of her desk was a large, round object. I could clearly see that it was black. She asked the boy what color the object was. "White,"he answered.
[4]I couldn't believe he said the object was white, when it was obviously black! Another argument started between my classmate and me, this time about the color of the object.
[5]The teacher told me to go to stand where the boy was standing and told him to come to stand where I had been. We changed places, and now she asked me what the color of the object was. I had to answer,"White." it was an object with two differently colored sides, and from his viewpoint it was white. Only from my side was it black.

① People today, in all this new world of technology and thinking, have lost sight of what a true friendship is. So, though I own my best friend Jenny, I thought I would help the world out a little and explain what real, true friends are.
② Friends don’t have to be exactly the same. They have similarities but __________________. The key to opening up the world of friendship is not only to expand on similarities but to accept each other’s faults, because you can’t ever judge your friend.
③ Friends have to argue! No one likes to but it is necessary to be healthy. Because if you agree on everything, either the government has expanded cloning subjects or someone isn’t being true and is trying a little too hard.
④ You have to be comfortable together. Otherwise, you just aren’t going to click. If you feel uneasy around the person then something isn’t quite right.
⑤Friends love unconditionally. They have their little angry moments but what’s done is done and all is forgiven and forgotten. Why let something that happened in the past ruin the happiness you could have in the future?
⑥Believe in love at first sight because there is the same thing happ ening in friendship. Some people think that you have to know someone really well to become good friends. Trust me, it’s not true.

If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, tossing and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you don’t feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and unable to face a new day.
Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates(暗示、表明)that . Dr. Winkle says, “The more we worry, the less we sleep, the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night’s sleep,” he adds, “we can often find the energy to deal with what’s worrying us.”
So, what is a good night’s sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours is about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.
Dr. Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain caffeine and will keep you awake. “When you put the light out,” Dr. Winkle says, “concentrate on relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you’ll be asleep before you know it.”

"Wow, you got an A without even studying."
"Your drawing is wonderful --you're my little Picasso."
If you're like most parents, you offer praise to your children believing it is the key to their success. But according to a new study, praise may do more harm than good.
For the study, after a simple IQ test, one group was told it did really well and must be very smart. The other group was told it did really well and must have worked hard. One group was praised for intelligence, .
Asked if they wanted to take a slightly harder test, the kids praised for their intelligence were unwillingly.Of those praised for their effort, however, 90 percent were eager for a more challenging task. And on a final test the effort group performed significantly better than the group praised for its intelligence.
Many of the kids who had been labeled "smart" performed worst of all.The "hard workers" got the message that they could improve their scores by trying harder, but the "smart" kids believed they should do well without any effort. Thus, kids who get too much praise are less likely to take risks, are highly sensitive to failure and are more likely to give up when faced with a challenge.
Tips for Parents:
◆Avoid labels.Praising for effort sends the message that your child has the power to improve and change.Be mindful of labeling yourself and others.
◆Teach kids from an early age that the brain is a muscle that can be strengthened with practice. This sends the message that kids can directly affect their intelligence.
◆Parents often praise their kids to make themselves feel good, or to protect their kids from failure. But it's vital for parents to help their kids to learn to deal with setbacks and to help them focus on ways to improve.

Most people agree that the direct American personality is a virtue, but it sometimes surprises foreigners. In many cultures, respect for older people or those in positions of authority keeps others from expressing their true feelings. But in the US, children often argue with their parents, students may disagree with their teachers, and citizens may express opposition to the actions of the government. If the soup has a fly in it or the meat is too tough to chew, the diner can complain to the waiter. If the boss makes a mistake, an employee will politely point it out.
Some straight talks about the American character must include the admission that Americans have their faults. The extremely competitive nature of Americans is probably their worst fault. Although sometimes it may promote excellence by encouraging individuals and businesses to try to do their best, the desire to get ahead of others sometimes causes people to do thing that are unkind and even dishonest. Also, Americans admire what is practical, fast, efficient, and fresh. Sometimes they fail to understand and appreciate practices that have greater respect for more traditional and more leisurely ways of doing things. On the other hand, people from other cultures may dislike the practical, challenging American lifestyle.
Despite culture differences, most foreigners give Americans credit for their virtues. Americans are generally viewed as friendly and energetic. Most newcomers to the US like American, and the feeling is usually mutual(相互的). Perhaps the greatest American virtue is a deep interest in new ideas and new people. In a nation of immigrants, the foreigner does not remain an outsider for long.

Electronic devices(装置) are changing the way people listen to music. But studies show the devices may be causing hearing loss in many people. Some experts say people may be playing them too loud and too long. And experts say sound levels on these devices need to be set lower.
Researchers did a study with three hundred high school students and one thousand adults. They were asked about their use of portable music devices. Forty percent of the students and adults said they set the sound levels at high on their players. But students were twice more likely to play the music at a very loud volume(音量). More than half of the students said they would probably not limit their listening time.
The study found that more than half of the students and less than forty percent of the adults had at least one kind of hearing loss. Some reported difficulty hearing parts of a discussion between two people. Others said they had to raise volume controls on a television or radio to hear it better. And, some experienced ringing in their ears or other noises.
Hearing experts say part of the problem is the listening equipment people are using. They say large earphones that cover the whole ear are probably safer than the smaller earbuds(耳塞) that come with most music players. Hearing loss may not be obvious for years, however, once it happens, there is few chance of curing. About thirty million Americans have some hearing loss. One third of them lost their hearing as a result of loud noises.
The American Speech-language-Hearing Association is working with companies and government officials on setting rules for use of portable music devices. The group says the best way to protect your hearing is to _______, limit listening time and use earphones that block out foreign noises.
