If you had to pick one, who do you think is greater in terms of their contributions to the Western world: British physicist Isaac Newton or Greek philosopher Aristotle?
Chances are that you’d find it hard to make a decision, at least right away.
But somehow, when it comes to picking a major at college, the decision couldn’t be easier: Science majors – the likes of technology, engineering and math – are the “wiser” choice because they’re considered to be useful, while studying liberal arts majors – language, music and philosophy – is believed to take you nowhere.
But if we take our eyes away from job skills for one second and look at liberal arts from a different perspective, we can see how important they are. In the BBC’s new documentary Civilizations, for example, presenters take us to 31 countries on six continents to appreciate human creativity, like Angkor Wat (吴哥窟) in Cambodia.
To Simon Schama, one of the presenters, human civilization isn’t just about technological inventions, but also “those moments when human beings first began to create things that were not purely for food or shelter, but were there to be seen, and to leave a mark of their existence for future humans to witness and admire”, he said.
In fact, by comparing science and liberal arts, we’re drawing “an artificial line” between the two. But to some of the greatest innovators in history, this line never existed in the first place.
Leonardo da Vinci, for example, was just as successful a scientist as he was a painter. Then there’s Steve Jobs, who, despite being an engineer, was also an artist on the inside. “It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough – it’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our heart sing.”
1.What’s the main purpose of this text?
A. To introduce the contributions of great men.
B. To compare science and liberal arts majors.
C. To explain the line between science and art.
D. To warn people not to undervalue liberal arts.
2.Which of the following is true according to the text?
A. Leonardo da Vinci was more successful as a painter.
B. It is the advanced technology that makes Apple successful.
C. People find it easier to choose a major at college than before.
D. There is actually no artificial line between science and liberal arts.
3.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Many people consider liberal arts majors useless.
B. Physicists are usually more important than philosophers.
C. Innovators prefer to become artists on the inside.
D. The program Civilizations can let us enjoy human creativity in 31 countries.

Do you love hamburgers? Do you how they were created?
The first hamburgers in U.S. history were served in New Haven, Connecticut, at Louis’ Lunch sandwich shop in 1895. Louis Lassen, founder of Louis’ Lunch, ran a small lunch wagon selling steak sandwiches to local factory workers. Because he didn’t like to waste the excess beef from his daily lunch rush, he ground it up, grilled it, and served it between two slice of bread—and thus America’s first hamburger was created.
The small Crown Street restaurant is still owned and operated by the third and fourth generations of the Lassen family. Hamburgers are still the specialty of the house, where steak is ground fresh each day and hand molded, slow cooked, broiled vertically, and served between two slices of toast with your choice of only three “acceptable” garnishes: cheese, tomato, and onion.
Want ketchup or mustard? Forget it. You will be told “no” in no uncertain terms. This is the home of the greatest hamburger in the world, claim the owners, who are perhaps best known for allowing their customers to have a burger the Lassen way or not at all.
1.Why did Louis Lassen start making hamburgers?

How many times do you have to fail at something in order to succeed? Did you know that Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times while trying to invent the light bulb? He certainly had a “learn and do” attitude! He was able to turn each failed experiment into a successful way to invent the light bulb. So what can we learn from this? You can adopt the “fail forward” strategy too.
In reality, none of us are failures. It’s true that we will experience times of defeat, problems, and disasters, but remember, each one of us is meant to succeed in life. However, we must choose our fate. Henry David Thoreau said, “Men are born to succeed, not to fail.”
We can never be forced into having a happy and successful life. Whether or not you experience success or failure is completely controlled by what you think and do. You are the only one who can choose the thoughts that will keep you from achieving the abundant life and joy that you are meant to have. No matter how difficult things may seem, say to yourself, “I choose to be a happy and successful person.”
Why do some people get what they want and others fail? I believe that getting what you desire in life takes planning, and it doesn’t just happen by luck. So how do we plan for success?
It has been proven that successful people do things more differently than unsuccessful people. They recognize the patterns of success and follow them; one of those patterns is planning. They plan what they think and do, which sets them apart. They know exactly what they desire, have an intelligent plan for getting it, and then work their plan. They know what success will cost them in terms of time, energy, and results, and they devote the right resources toward making their plans happen.

D.no one can succeed without difficulty and suffering
3.The main idea of the last two paragraphs is that ________.
A.planning plays an important role in success
B.successful people differ from unsuccessful ones
C.successful people have many patterns of success
D.devoting the right resources can help reach one’s goal
4.Which of the following would match the text?

It's long been thought that in order to succeed in life you need to think only of yourself and ignore the needs of others. New research, however, suggests the exact opposite is true and being nice to others actually makes you more likely to be successful. The scientists found that ‘givers’ were more likely to share knowledge, and in turn gain more information themselves.
Researchers divided participants into three groups based on a personality test: givers, takers and matchers. In a social dilemma task, participants were given a made-up donation which was equal to the amount of £ 240($400). They were then asked to decide how much of their money they would give to a shared group pool. They were told that the money in the pool would be doubled and divided equally among all group members. Thus, it would be more beneficial to the group as a whole if everyone contributed their individual donations. However, it would be more beneficial for the individual if everyone else from the group contributed, while the individual kept his or her own money. The researchers used this strategic (策略的) information sharing task to examine how much and which pieces of information participants shared: the less important and already known information or the really important information only known by the individual.
The results showed that givers are less self-centered and self-loving than takers. Givers shared not only more money with the group, but they also shared important information. Takers on the other hand kept both the money as well as different types of information.
The findings suggest that it may not be enough to simply provide knowledge management tools in order to make the best of knowledge exchange in a group of people. It may be necessary for leaders and managers to keep in mind the personality styles of their employees. Specifically, they should be aware that takers may keep the important information for themselves.
1.What is the traditional opinion about success?
A. Cooperating and communicating with others.
B. Sharing knowledge and information with others.
C. Being warm-hearted and enthusiastic to others.
D. Paying all attention to your own need.
2.What can we learn from the results of the personality test?
A. Being self-centered and self-loving were unpopular.
B. Both givers and takers benefited from each other.
C. Takers got more than givers in money and information.
D. Sharing in turn brings more money and important information.
3.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. Knowledge exchange in a company is not enough.
B. Knowing the personality styles helps the development of the company.
C. Leaders should not share any information with his employees.
D. Employees often keep important information to themselves.
4.In which column of the newspaper will you find this passage?
