A new study suggests that washing dishes by hand is healthier than using a dishwasher.
Nobody likes doing the dishes, but it turns out that doing this task might pay off in an unexpected way.According to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, washing dishes by hand instead of using a dishwasher might prevent the development of allergies(过敏).
Researchers in Sweden surveyed the parents of 1,029 children aged 7 and 8.They discovered that children whose families hand-washed the dishes instead of using a machine were less likely to have allergies.
Earlier research has shown that dishes washed by machine are cleaner than those washed by hand.So why would kids who eat off of slightly dirtier plates be better off when it comes to preventing allergies? One explanation is based on a theory known as the “hygiene hypothesis”,which says the reason kids develop allergies is that their surroundings are actually too clean.Your immune system keeps you healthy by fighting germs(细菌)like bacteria and viruses. But when you have allergies,it overreacts and tries to fight ordinary things like pollen(花粉)or certain foods.
Being exposed to germs, especially early in life,is good training for the immune system, says the lead author of the study,Dr.Bill Hesselmar of Queen Silvia Hospital in Sweden.“You stimulate the immune system in various ways and it becomes tolerant.”
This study shows that while using the dishwasher might be easier, the old-fashioned method of cleaning up could be better for your health.
1.What is the benefit of washing dishes by hand?
A. It can improve our immune system.
B. It is easier than washing by machine.
C. It costs less time than washing by machine.
D. It might reduce the chance of developing allergies.
2.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Our health depends much on our immune system.
B. Children in clean environment must have allergies.
C. Our immune system can only fight bacteria and viruses.
D. Hand-washed dishes are as clean as those washed by machine.
3.What do we know about germs from the passage?
A. Without germs,people won’t get sick.
B. There are no germs in clean environment.
C. Exposure to germs can improve our immune system.
D. Germs like bacteria and viruses do harm to our health.

A new study by Penn State College of Medicine research team found that honey is a better and safer treatment for children than cough medicines.
Ian Paul, the study’s lead researcher, was motivated to test honey because treating coughs in children has recently become a sticky subject. Coughing is the body’s way of cleaning irritated (受刺激的) airways to help you breathe. But too much coughing can irritate your lungs and throat even more. It can also make it tough to get the sleep your body needs to heal. Hoping to ease the suffering of their children, parents often give them cough medicines.
But there have never been any good studies showing that they work. Cough and cold medicines may also cause serious side effects. Hundreds of kids die in the hospital each year after receiving too much cough medicine by mistake. Last October, the US Food and Drug Administration suggested that parents should not give cough medicines to children under 6.
In order to search for a different solution, Paul designed a study that involved 105 kids who were sick with coughs and other cold conditions. At bedtime, the kids took buckwheat(荞麦) honey, honey-flavored (蜜蜂味的) DM (one of the most common ingredients成分in cough medicine), or no treatment. Parents and kids in the no-treatment group knew they weren’t getting anything, but the other two groups weren’t told which treatment they were getting.
The surveys showed that kids who swallowed about 2 teaspoons of buckwheat
honey before bedtime coughed less and slept better than kids in other groups.
“When parents want something for their kids to take,” Paul says, “honey seems
like the best option.”
But what gives honey its healing power? Substances called antioxidants(抗氧化剂) may be part of the answer. All honey contains antioxidants that protect our cells from damage. Studies show that antioxidant levels in the body rise after someone swallows honey.
1.Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
A. Sweet solution to kids’ coughing
B. No cough medicines to children
C. Best treatment for your cold
D. Cough medicines don’t work
2.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that coughing ______.
A. can cure lung and throat diseases
B. is more harmful to children
C. sometimes does good to people
D. helps improve children’s die
3.During Paul’s experiment, the kids who received treatment __________.
A. seemed much worse than before
B. had no idea what they swallowed
C. knew they weren’t getting anything
D. coughed less and slept better
4. According to the passage, Paul’s experiment proved that ____.
A. honey may have real healing power
B. cough medicines may cause side effect
C. cough medicines don’t really work
D. buckwheat honey contain more antioxidants

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑).
Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度). But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes "mindlessly" by taking down word for word what the professors said.
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers' report said, "While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."
In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.
1.More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can .
A. write more notes B. digest concepts better
C. get higher scores D. understand lectures better
2.While taking notes, laptop users tend to be .
A. mindless B. skillful
C. thoughtful D. tireless
3.The author of the passage aims to .
A. examine the importance of long-term memory
B. promote the use of laptops
C. explain the process of taking notes
D. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand
4.The passage is likely to appear in .
A. a newspaper advertisement B. a computer textbook
C. a science magazine D. a finance report

A new study suggests that the roundtheclock availability that cell phones have brought to people's lives may take a toll on family life. The study, which followed more than 1,300 adults over 2 years, found that those who consistently used a mobile phone throughout the study period were more likely to report negative “spillover” between work and home life—and,in turn, less satisfaction with their family life.
Spillover essentially(本质上)means that the line between work and home begins to become unclear. Work life may invade home life when a parent is taking jobrelated calls at home, for instance—or family issues may start to take up work time. For example,a child may call mum at work, telling her “microwave exploded”,explained Noelle Chesley,an assistant professor of sociology at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee and the author of the study. The problem with cell phones seems to be that they are allowing for even more spillover between work and home.
This may be especially true for working women, the study found. Among men, consistent use of mobile phones seemed to allow more work issues to creep (潜入)into family time. But for women, the spillover tended to go in both directions. Being “connected” meant that work cut into home time, and family issues came into work life.
Cell phones seem to be opening more lines for stressful exchanges among family members. But there may be ways to control the spillover, according to Chesley. Employers, she said, could look at their policies on contacting employees after hours to make sure their expectations are “reasonable”.For their part, employees could decide that cell phones go off during family time, Chesley said.
1.What does the underlined phrase “take a toll on” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A.explaining. B.founding. C. extending D.damaging.
2.According to Chesley, what is the best solution to the problem caused by cell phones?
A.Separate work hours from family time.
B.Refuse to use cell phones.
C.Ignore coming calls during family time.
D.Encourage women to stay at home.
3.We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.cell phones affect men as much as women
B.cell phones seem to be convenient to families
C.cell phones make the line between work and home unclear
D.we can do nothing to solve the problem
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to control the negative spillover caused by cell phones.
B. How work life invades home life.
C. Consistent use of cell phones makes people feel less satisfied with their work.
D. Cell phones cause negative "spillover" between work life and home life.
