Even if you really enjoy your job, it’s still possible to battle boredom as you work. You may not be able to make big changes—or change your job—but you can make small adjustments to your routine that can make every day seem, well, a little less routine.
1. Switch Your Seat
Change your outlook at the office by changing your office. Ask your supervisor to help you find a new desk. Even switching desks with a neighboring coworker can offer a fresh atmosphere.
If it's not possible to change your location, see if you can change your desk’s direction. A new view can be just as refreshing as a new location.
2. ______________
Start and end your day in a different way. Consider a new mode of transportation, if it’s possible. Take a subway. Ride a bike on sunny days. Carpool with a coworker. Use a new route to get to your job. You needn't change it for ever—just long enough to help you escape the boredom.
3. Find a New Work Style
Sick of attending that long-standing Monday morning meeting? Try to change it to the afternoon.
If you find yourself feeling most bored in the afternoons, try to arrange to do your favorite tasks then and tackle less desirable projects in the mornings.
If you usually communicate with coworkers via email and instant messaging, start dealing with people face to face. Increased communication with coworkers may help improve your mood.
4. Get and Set a Goal
If your work is short of objectives, it's no wonder that work has become boring. Identify a goal and set an “achieve by” date for it.
Your goal needn’t be noble as long as you have enough enthusiasm for it. Perhaps you want to make a new project. Maybe you’d like to pursue a promotion. Or you may even set a goal of finding a new job altogether. Whatever it is, actively move toward an objective.

"Wow, you got an A without even studying."
"Your drawing is wonderful --you're my little Picasso."
If you're like most parents, you offer praise to your children believing it is the key to their success. But according to a new study, praise may do more harm than good.
For the study, after a simple IQ test, one group was told it did really well and must be very smart. The other group was told it did really well and must have worked hard. One group was praised for intelligence, .
Asked if they wanted to take a slightly harder test, the kids praised for their intelligence were unwillingly.Of those praised for their effort, however, 90 percent were eager for a more challenging task. And on a final test the effort group performed significantly better than the group praised for its intelligence.
Many of the kids who had been labeled "smart" performed worst of all.The "hard workers" got the message that they could improve their scores by trying harder, but the "smart" kids believed they should do well without any effort. Thus, kids who get too much praise are less likely to take risks, are highly sensitive to failure and are more likely to give up when faced with a challenge.
Tips for Parents:
◆Avoid labels.Praising for effort sends the message that your child has the power to improve and change.Be mindful of labeling yourself and others.
◆Teach kids from an early age that the brain is a muscle that can be strengthened with practice. This sends the message that kids can directly affect their intelligence.
◆Parents often praise their kids to make themselves feel good, or to protect their kids from failure. But it's vital for parents to help their kids to learn to deal with setbacks and to help them focus on ways to improve.

If you do not use your arm or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: Practice remembering.

[1]Have you ever been in the situation where you really didn’t believe what someone was saying? Did you have a sense that something didn’t ring true or a feeling that all was not right? Perhaps they were saying ‘‘Yes’’ yet their heads were shaking “No”.
[2]The difference between the words people speak and our understanding of______comes from non-verbal communication, otherwise known as “body language”. Body language includes body movements and gestures(1egs,arms,hands,head and body),posture, muscle tension, eye contact, skin coloring, even people’s breathing rate and sweat.Additionally, the tone of voice, the rate of speech and the pitch of the voice all add to the words that are being used.
[3] By developing your awareness of the signs and signals of body language, you can more easily understand other people, and more effectively communicate with them. There are sometimes subtle(微妙的)—and sometimes not so subtle—movements, gestures, facial expressions and even shifts in our whole bodies that indicate something is going on.We have ways of talking, walking, sitting and standing and they all say something about us,and whatever is happening on the inside can be reflected on the outside.
[4]By becoming more aware of this body language and understanding what it might mean, you can learn to read people more easily. This puts you in a better position to communicate effectively with them. What’s more, by increasing your understanding of others, you can also become more aware of the messages that you convey to them.
[5] There are times when we send mixed messages—we say one thing yet our body language reveals something different. This non-verbal language will affect how we act and react to others, and how they react to us.Therefore,in order to communicate more effectively,we should learn
the signs and signals of body language correctly.

If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, tossing and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you don’t feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and unable to face a new day.
Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates(暗示、表明)that . Dr. Winkle says, “The more we worry, the less we sleep, the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night’s sleep,” he adds, “we can often find the energy to deal with what’s worrying us.”
So, what is a good night’s sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours is about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.
Dr. Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain caffeine and will keep you awake. “When you put the light out,” Dr. Winkle says, “concentrate on relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you’ll be asleep before you know it.”

Can you really lose your job for posting an opinion on Twitter, or even for clicking "like" on someone else's message?Pascal, an employment lawyer in the Netherlands, assumes that about one in ten laying-off is connected to behavior on social media.
Controversial opinions were once expressed in bars after work, and went no further. Today Twitter and other social media broadcast employees' thoughts, making it easy for anyone offended to put together a revenge(报复)against the poster and their employer.
Though it's not necessarily in companies' interests to allow the free expression of opinion, it's clearly in society's interest. Free speech is the foundation of democracy(民主). In laying down clear rules, we should remember that offending and harassing(骚扰)are different. It's not reasonable for companies to try to prevent their employees from expressing displeasure at something, no matter how strongly others disagree-at least if that's not relevant to the job they do. But an employee who repeatedly makes unfavorable comments at work has crossed the line into harassment, and this should be grounds for dismissal.
There's also a difference between what people do at work and what they do outside. Speech is like a dress code. Companies can demand that their employees look the part at work. After people go home, though, they should express their opinions freely, just as they're free to change into jeans and T-shirt. A woman fired in 2004 by a housing firm for displaying a sticker backing John Kerry on her car was poorly treated. The situation is more complicated when it comes to public figures such as sports stars, who in effect sell their image as well as their labor.
Firms will try to preserve their freedom, but laws against unfair dismissal that protect speech will help them stand up to complaints from angry people. Geographical and technological spaces are increasingly separated, which makes it important that people tolerate different views at work, especially outside it.
1.What can we infer from Pascal's assumption?
A.Different opinions are tolerated on social media posts
B.Posting an opinion on social media is strictly forbidden.
C.Many employees are fired because of their social media posts.
D.Contradictory opinions can easily invite revenge from others.
2.How does the author view the woman fired in 2004?
A.She did something not proper at work.
B.She made unfavorable comments at work.
C.She shouldn't have used a sticker on her car.
D.She was treated unfairly by her company.
3.Which of the following does the underlined word "this" refer to?
A.Going beyond speech restriction.
B.The freedom of speech after work.
C.Making unfavorable remarks repeatedly at work.
D.Disagreeing with people in the workplace.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Speech after Work Shouldn't Cause Unemployment
B.Dress Code Is Different from Expressing Opinions
C.We Should Avoid Offending People in Any Situation
D.Our Speech Should Be Properly Relevant to Our Work

高三英语单项填空中等难度题查看答案及解析
Even if you are saying and doing the right things at your job and in your personal life, you could be making a bad impression on everyone with what you don’t say. That’s because much of our reactions to others are based on body language. If your body language is communicating a negative message, that’s the message you could be sending, regardless of what actual words come out of your mouth.
What are negative messages sent via body language? Things like having arms folded across your chest can show hostility(敌意). Lack of eye contact can indicate shiftiness(奸诈). An unsmiling face could communicate a variety of things, like anger, disappointment, or sadness, depending upon what other facial expressions are included.
Want to know what body language communicates? Watch a TV show or a movie with the sound off, and see how much you can figure out of the plot, or at least you can get a sense of what is going on.
However, many of the clues that indicate negativity could also be the result of nervousness or other issues. For example, somebody who doesn’t make eye contact could simply be nervous. The same goes with a not-so-warm hand-shake. Or, someone folding his arms could simply be more comfortable with the arms that way, not realizing what the arms’ position sends. Someone who doesn’t smile could be self-conscious about her teeth. At any rate, the person who sends off bad body language may not even realize that they’re doing it.
Unfortunately, some people who do recognize what body language communicates are scam(骗局) artists. They may have the firmest handshake, the shiniest smile, and make the greatest eye contact to convince others of their sincerity, because they know how much this nonverbal communications plays a part in communicating sincerity. Yet people fall for it, because their body language seems sincere.
But what if you’re in the opposite situation? If you’re not sure what your body language is communicating, ask a trusted friend for help. You can also concentrate on standing up straight and sitting up straight, if posture(姿势) is a problem. Practicing in front of a mirror can help you get rid of bad habits. Remember to smile and nod if needed. And try to learn how to relax. Before you know it, you will be sending more positive messages with your body language.
1.A serious face could indicate a lot of different information________.
A. especially anger and disappointment
B. together with the arms folded across
C. together with other facial expressions
D. depending on others’ facial expressions
2.The underlined expression “ fall for it ” ( paragraph 5) probably means _______.
A. be taken in B. be fully used
C. be used to it D. like it soon
3.A not-so-warm handshake may represent_______.
A. fear B. excitement
C. confidence D. nervousness

A. Facial Expressions and Messages
B. Be Careful of False Body Language
C. Is Your Body Language Hurting You?
D. What Can Body Language Communicate?
