I’d always dreamed of exploring Africa, ever since I read my first Tarzan(《人猿泰山》)comic as a child. Finally, in 2004, to celebrate my 60th birthday, I went to Tanzania to experience a safari(东非游猎)and climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Seated next to me on the flight was Tanzania’s minister of water and wildlife development. We talked for thousands of miles, and he arranged me to visit a school. When I toured the school, I was shocked. The leaky(漏的)roofs turned the dirt floors into mud during the rainy season, and the walls couldn’t keep out the heat, cold or bugs(小昆虫). The school was in need of all material goods, but the kids possessed great human spirit.
It broke my heart that these children had to struggle to survive, so I asked the headmaster what it would cost to feed them. As little as 20 cents per child per day, he told me. Immediately I got home, I founded Kids of Kilimanjaro. Since then we’ve grown to provide hot lunches for nearly 13,000 schoolchildren every day. The free lunch program has eased a major problem the youngsters face.
I know a good education could really make a difference in these children’s lives. My parents always stressed the importance of education. I paid my own way through college in Tokyo by teaching English to students and businesspeople. After attending university I moved to San Francisco, when I was 25 years old. In 1978 I realized my American dream when I founded my own company. My success all started with a good education.
It’s amazing that something as simple as a nutritious lunch can change and enrich so many lives. Giving young people a better, healthier life can inspire them to go all the way through college and lead a movement that transforms their country.

The dream of my travel was to be Paris, the city I'd always longed to see. But now I was frightened to travel without a companion.I steeled myself and went anyway.I arrived at the train station in Paris panicked.Pulling my red suitcase behind me,I was pushed by sweaty travelers. On my first Metro ride, I encountered a clumsy pickpocket.I melted him with a look, and he eased his hand from my purse to fade into the crowded car. At my stop,I carried my heavy suitcase up the steep stairs and froze in confusion.Somewhere in this confusing city my hotel was hidden, but suddenly I couldn’t read my own directions.I stopped two people. Both greeted me with that Parisian face that said:"Yes, I speak English, but you'll have to struggle with your French if you want to talk to me."
When I finally found the hotel,my heart was pounding. Then when I saw my room, I couldn't stay.Could I? The wallpaper looked like it had been through a fire. The bathroom was down the hall, and the window looked out onto the brick wall of another building.Welcome to Paris. It was my third week away from home and my kids, and I had arrived in the most romantic city in the world, alone, lonely and very scared.
The most important thing I did in Paris happened at that moment. I knew that if I didn't go out, right then, and find a place to have dinner,I would hide in this place my entire time in Paris. During my week's stay in Paris, I did everything there was to do,and it was the greatest week of my European vacation.I returned home a believer in the healing power of solitary travel.Traveling alone makes up for its problems by demanding self-reliance and building the kind of confidence that serves the single life well.Certainly Paris became my metaphor(比喻说法)for addressing life's challenges on my own.Now when I meet an obstacle I just say to myself: If I can go to Paris,I can go anywhere.
1.How did the two Parisians respond when the author turned to them?

In the middle of the 19th century,a fever dream of riches beyond measure drew countless explorers west to the mountains of central California.Although the gold rush ended up being a bust for many who sought a fortune, some of those explorers discovered a natural treasure that would draw permanent settlers to Yosemite Valley in the following decade.
Vast wilderness, beautiful mountains, countless waterfalls, and abundant wildlife drew Native Americans to Yosemite roughly 10,000 years ago.The first non-native tourists arrived in the mid-1850s after reports from gold seekers told of an area of breathtaking beauty that no words were able to describe.

Located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in central California,Yosemite National Park runs across nearly 748,000 acres, almost 95%of which is wilderness.Around four million visitors come to Yosemite each year to camp, hike its miles of trails, climb its rock formations, and photograph its impressive sights. Are you ready to visit Yosemite National Park?
