America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect (影响) American society in many ways — education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society— one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行为)is suitable (合适)at various ages. A person's age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There's no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school ,get a job, or stop working isn't as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the firs time. Public ideas are changing. Many people say, 'I am much younger than my mother - or my father - was at my age.' No one says ‘Act your age’ anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.
1.It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America_________ .
A.has made people feel younger
B.has changed people's social position
C. has changed people's understanding of age
D. has slowed down the country's social development
2.The underlined word ‘one’ refers to_________.
A. a society B. America C. a place D. population
3.‘Act your age’ means people should_________.
A.be active when they are old
B.do the right thing at the right age
C. show respect for their parents young or old
D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age
4.If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ______.
A.normal B.wonderful C.unbelievable D.unreasonable

[1]Every year, lots of children die in traffic accidents, and many of these tragedies occur because child safety seats are not properly installed or are not used at all. As more and more families buy private cars, it’s time to _______________ the safety of children.
[2]Parents tend to let the child sit alone in the front passenger seat, or leave the child alone in the back of the car without any safety restraints, have the child held in an adult’s lap, or have the child use an adult’s safety belt. All of these can potentially add elements of danger for a child in a car.
[3]In the 1970s, Western countries began to research safety devices for children in cars. It was later found that special safety devices for children in cars will help to reduce injury by about 70 percent, and child safety seats play a key role in protecting children in case of traffic accidents.
[4]Since 1999, automakers have been required to put child restraint systems in cars in the United States. There are more than 25 million child safety seats in the United States, compared to only 600,000 in China. Today, more than 40 countries in the world have already issued relevant legal regulations, making it compulsory that children sit in safety seats. In Germany, the Netherlands and Japan, children under 12 years old are required to sit in child safety seats.
[5]China is a manufacturing base for child safety seats, but the market in China is still limited. As a result, while we export our products to other countries, our own children in China are rarely provided with safety seats for various reasons. We hope this situation will be improved.

Every year in the first week of English class, some students inform me that writing is too hard. They never write, unless homework requires it. They find the writing process painful and difficult.
How awful it is to be able to speak in a language but not to write in it, especially with its rich vocabulary. Being able to speak but not write is like living in an enormous mansion and never leaving one small room. When I meet students who think they can’t write, I know, as a teacher my duty is to show them the rest of the rooms. My task is to build fluency and accuracy while providing the opportunity in any writing activity to enhance(增强)the moral and emotional development of my students.
One great way to do this is by having students write in a journal in class every day.
Writing ability is like strength training. Writing needs to be done just like exercise; just as muscles grow stronger with exercise, writing skills improve quickly with writing practice daily. I often see a rise in student confidence and performance after only a few weeks of journal writing.
Expressing oneself in writing is one of the most important skills I teach to strengthen the whole students. When my students practice journal writing, they are practicing for their future academic, political, and emotional lives. They build skills so that some say they might write a great novel, a piece of sorely needed legislation(法规), or the perfect love letter. That they write in their journals every day puts them a step closer to fluency, eloquence(雄辩)and command of the language.
1.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To encourage students to keep a journal every day.
B.To analyze students’ problems in learning languages.
C.To stress the importance of writing in language learning.
D.To introduce an effective way of improving students’ writing.
2.The underlined phrase “an enormous mansion” in Paragraph 2 refers to students’ ________.
A.writing opportunity B.large house
C.large vocabulary D.emotional life
3.In the author’s view, what can students benefit from the journal writing?
A.It is beneficial to students’ future career.
B.It can make students more emotional.
C.It is helpful to students’ homework.
D.It can enlarge students’ vocabulary.

Nowadays people are facing lots of threats(威胁)all over the world.
A serious threat to farmers in many parts of the world is erosion(侵蚀).Erosion happens if a large area of land is cleared of trees and is then badly treated by the farmers. The rain and winds may gradually wash away,or blow away much of the topsoil. When this happens, crops of wheat and corn become weaker and weaker until nothing grows well.If erosion continues,it will turn good land into a desert.
In the past, when erosion appeared, farmers sometimes moved to a new place to farm.Sometimes they could not move, but continued to try to grow food in the unhealthy soil. This caused them to sink into poverty.Soon some people realized that there was little rich, fertile soil in the world. The government began to try to stop erosion.
One of the first experiments to stop erosion began in the United States in 1933.The experiment was carried out in the area of the Tennessee River.Flood and bad farming in this area had ruined the land that had once been rich.As a result, most of the people living around the Tennessee River were very poor.
The government built big dams across the river and stored the water for use during the dry season, when there was no rain. The government workers also helped the farmers fertilize their soil and to learn new farming methods which could stop erosion.
In the beginning, the farmers were not interested. But soon, good healthy crops began to appear on the land where new methods were used.Ten years after that the crops were extremely good. The great success of this experiment led to similar projects in other parts of the world.
With the development of science and technology, people are trying to get rid of all the threats they are facing. However,it's not an easy job, because at the same time people are polluting their homeland.
1.Which of the following statements is NOT true about the Tennessee River area?
A. It was an area seriously affected by erosion.
B. It used to be a poor and infertile land.
C. It often suffered from floods.
D. It has become a model for other parts of the world to follow.
2.In the third paragraph “to sink into poverty” means_________.
A. to become very poor
B. to lose topsoil in erosion
C. to become weaker and weaker until nothing grows well
D. to return into a desert
