In life, once on a path,we tend to follow it,for better or worse. What's sad is that even if it's the latter,we often accept it anyway because we are so used to the way things are that wed don't even recognize that they could be different This is a phenomenon psychologist call functional fixedness.
This classic experiment will give you an idea of how it works and a sense of whether you may have fallen into the same trap: People are given a box of tacks (大头钉) and some matches and asked to find a way to attach a candle to a wall so that it burns properly.
Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle to the wall or lighting it to fix it with melted wax. The psychologists had, of course, arranged it so that neither of these obvious approaches would work. The tacks are too short, and the paraffin (石蜡) doesn't stick to the wall. So how can you complete the task? The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle-holder. You empty it, tack it to the wall. and stand the candle inside it. To think of that, you have to look beyond the box's usual role as a receptacle just for tacks and re-imagine it serving an entirely new purpose. That is difficult because we all suffer to one degree or another from functional fixedness.
The inability to think in new ways affects people in every corner of society. The political theorist Hannah Arendt coined the phrase“frozen thoughts”to describe deeply held ideas that we no longer question but should. In Arendt's eyes, the self- content reliance on such accepted “truths”also made people blind to ideas that didn't fit their worldview, even when there was plenty of evidence for them.
Frozen thinking has nothing to do with intelligence, she said,“It can be found in highly intelligent people.”

3.Which of the following statements will Hannah Arendt agree with?
A.People should question.
B.We should be used to the way things are.
C.People shouldn't accept the idea that doesn't fit their worldview.
D.The smarter people are,the more open to the new things they are.

C.A theory to be proved.

Anxiety is tough to deal with at the best of time. It’s even tougher when we’re in the midst of apandemic (大流行病) that is causing chaos around the globe. Here are some simple steps that will help you take back control of the situation.
Stay away from the news. Constantly reading, watching, or checking the news only makes your anxiety grow stronger. 1. Before you know it, your work breaks turn into checking the latest news on coronavirus (冠状病毒) on your phone. Because it’s easier to nip (阻止) a bad habit in the bud, try to limit the amount of time you spend watching the news.
Distract (使分心) yourself. 2. We can’t panic about coronavirus and at the same time be absorbed by a work project. So next time a worrying thought creeps into your mind, try to distract yourself. lt can be with work, taking a shower, or even watching a silly YouTube video.
Choose what you focus on. It’s a difficult time, because we’re isolated and many of us feel lonely and helpless. Instead of thinking about social isolation and the difficulties, which can make us depressed, you are supposed to change the focus. Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but have never had the time?3.Could you sign up for a self-improvement webinar (在线研讨会) that allows you to gain life skills?
4. Even though we’re socially distancing ourselves from other people, this doesn’t mean that we should be socially isolating ourselves. Make use of technology and FaceTime or Skype with the people you care about.
Remember:thoughts are mental events that will pass. Consider practicing some mindfulness meditation. Focus on your breaths going in and out of your lungs while gently letting go of thoughts.5.
A.Stay connected.
B.Keep optimistic.
C.Your curiosity can turn into a habit.
D.It will help to do something you like.
E.Our minds can’t hold two thoughts at once.
F.Doing this can calm you and it can ground you.

When it comes to creativity, one of our biggest concerns is usually how we can be more creative, or how to come up with better ideas. I've gathered some of the most practical studies to help improve creativity.1.
Many people think that happiness is the ideal state to create something. Recently a study on creativity made a great conclusion. 2.I don't want you to put yourself in a bad mood to create something, but next time you're in strong feeling, try to sit down and focus that energy on creating something.
3.Reading or feeling absurd ( or dreamlike) things can help boost( 促进) pattern recognition and creative thinking. Because the mind is always seeking to make sense of the things that it sees, and such objects put it in"overdrive" while the mind tries to work out exactly what it is looking at or reading. I like reading interesting short stories like The Last Question when looking for inspiration.
You can also get moving, because it's suggested that exercise can actually improve creative thinking as well, due to its ability to get the heart pumping and put people in a positive mood. 4. I's not necessarily the act; it's the change in moods. f you’re stuck in a creative job and want to take a break, try exercise while your brain is subconsciously at work. 5. I tend to jogging outdoors in this case, and it's truly helpful for me.
A.Why not stick to reading?
B.Experiencing something unreasonable works.
C.It may help to speed up your " Aha!" moment.
D.Creativity increases when whatever feelings run high.
E.Try a few out for yourself and see which ones work best.
F.It can produce more creative thoughts just like thinking about love.
G.We are in two very different states of mind when trying to create something.

It is always difficult when we are exposed to someone who has a different opinion than our own. When opinions differ, there is often a conflict. This is where much of the conflict with adults and teens begins. Therefore, it is important to always make the difference clear between fact and opinion. Opinions change, facts always remain the same.
I have found that it does absolutely no good to tell someone they’re wrong. I have found that to be more effective is to help someone see the consequences of their behavior for themselves. If you don’t know there is the cliff, why would you ever be concerned about being close to the edge?
I dealt with a teen today who was involved in some gangster (歹徒) activities. This girl was raised in a good home with concerned parents. However, other interests have taken over in her life. Friends have become everything. These friends come from different families with different values. This is where the conflict has appeared in her life. The challenge for the rest of us is helping this girl see how and where her new interests will take her. We have felt mild success as relationships of trust are built and improved.
In the end, however, the teen has to make a choice regarding this conflict. It is important for adults to remember how serious this choice is. For some this can feel like a choice between life and death. It’s easy for the rest of us to be casual about this because the right choice seems so obvious to us. It is important to know it is much different to this young person who is still developing and searching. Therefore, it is important that the adult should do everything possible to help the teen be fully informed about the choice before them. Provide choices and show how making different choices will improve things and provide security for the teen now and in the future.
The choice to go with the crowd or with the few can be a very difficult one to make. I believe it is absolutely essential that we never give up on these kids. Our very own future is absolutely at key point any time we advise and guide the youth.
1.From paragraph 1 we know the gap between father and son lies in that _________.
A.facts always remain the same
B.opinions are always different from facts
C.different opinions result from their conflict
D.they have a disagreement about the same fact
2.What contributes to the girl’s crime according to the text?
A.Different values. B.Unconcerned parents.
C.Her poor family. D.Gangster activities
3.Adults should try their best to help teens make a choice regarding the conflict because _________.
A.the wrong choice will lead to complete failure in the future
B.the choice is difficult to make for still developing teens
C.the right choice is easy for adults to see and understand
D.the choice made by teens determines their life or death
4.Why should the adult never stop helping the teen according to the last paragraph?
A.Because the teen won’t give up themselves.
B.Because the adults’ future depends on the youth.
C.Because the adult can give advice and guidance.
D.Because the teen’s future is in danger.
5.It can be inferred from the text that _________.
A.showing the results of their behavior is a good way to help people
B.helping teenagers always means meeting trouble
C.it’s quite easy to keep a good relationship with others
D.it’s hard to make wise choices in our life

The attraction of television is undeniable when it comes to kids. 1. Here are guidelines we created to help us decide what’s appropriate for our family:
Monitor television time. Choosing good shows isn’t a big issue if you’re not watching a lot of television, so really the best solution to finding appropriate television is saying, “Go play.” 2.
Don’t trust network ratings. A kid-approved stamp given by a television network is a general guide that doesn’t take into account your parenting style and the things your family feels are important. 3. There are plenty of adult cartoon shows on television now, many with highly inappropriate topics.
4. The bottom line is, I want to know what my kids are watching, and if the TV is on my time in our home, I want to first approve of the show ahead of time, and second to watch it with my kids so that I’m aware of anything they might be seeing that needs intervention(干涉).
Talk about the show with your kids. As kids get older, we realize that we can’t shelter them from every single person/show/behavior that doesn’t fit exactly with our values. They’re going to hear a swear word from time to time—and might walk into the room while the characters in the romantic comedy we’re watching are kissing. 5.
A. If it doesn’t feel good, turn it off.
B. And be aware of cartoons!
C. We can talk about what we see, though, using story-lines to teach lessons when possible.
D. The standard for what our kids can watch might be difficult to set.
E. But how do you choose which shows are appropriate for the younger set?
F. Watch TV with them.
G. Still, a little bit of television doesn’t hurt and can be fun.
