By the time Robert Porter Allen was born in 1905, the whooping crane(鸣鹤)was already in trouble. The beautiful bird was once commonly found across North America. By 1941, the whooping crane population had dwindled to the double digits. The tallest species in North America were critically endangered.
In the 1940s, the remaining cranes migrate(迁徙) every year from the Gulf Coast of Texas to somewhere in the north of Canada to breed(繁殖). The conservation community didn’t know where the birds went. The wetlands where they used to spend winters were growing rarer and rarer as they tiny, non-migrating group of whooping cranes was alive in Louisiana in 1941, but the group had disappeared by the time Allen started his research.
In 1942, Allen undertook the whooping crane project Over the next three years, he did almost constant field work that took him from Texas up the cranes' migration route to Nebraska, and on into Saskatchewan in search of the nesting ground of the birds.
Studying the bird in its breeding habitat and seeing how many birds were born would allow conservationists to understand how to help the birds on their journey. But finding the whooping crane 's nesting site meant difficult and fruitless air searches over northern Canada.
In 1952, Allen wrote a report on the whooping crane. The report was a warning call to the conservation community: only 33 migratory "whoopers" remained, and their nesting site still hadn’t been found. Two years later, the whooping cranes breeding grounds in Canada's Wood Buffalo National Park were finally found, and Allen headed north to study them firsthand, an "incredibly difficult journey, "in Sprunt’s words, Allen’s work laid the groundwork for conservationists to save the birds.
Their efforts paid off as the numbers reached 57 by 1970 and 214 by 2005.Today, the whooping crane is still listed as endangered, but there are roughly 600 birds alive.

I was in the seventh grade, and we had moved to New Jersey in November. By then, everyone already had had their own friends, and no one wanted to talk to a new girl. To make things worse, they put me in “Section L”. I found out later that everyone called Section L “Loserville”. It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids. When I found out, I wanted to scream. I had always been a good student and had amazing friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!
I did text my friends in Illinois almost every night, especially my best friend, Ana. At first my friends wanted to hear all about it. But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable I was. One night when I was texting with Ana, I complained about another friend who had just done that.
Ana’s texts came really fast for the next few minutes and they surprised me. She said that she was tired of hearing about how bad everything was in New Jersey, too. She said she did not want to hurt my feelings but that I needed to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time, I had to try to make things better.
The next day, I thought a lot about what Ana had said. She was right!
I wish I could say that everything changed overnight after that, but it didn’t. I was still stuck in “Loserville”, and some people were still mean to me, even though I tried to just stay out of their way.
But what did change was me—I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends. I signed up to make sets for the school play. I met a lot of new people there, and suddenly I had friends to say hi to in the halls!
I still miss Illinois sometimes, but life in New Jersey isn’t so hard anymore. Even though I couldn’t change my situation, I could change my attitude—and that made all the difference.

Walter Osipoff was an experienced parachutist(伞兵).He had already made more than 20 jumps by May 15 , 1941. That morning, Osipoff trained his soldiers to practice jumps. Three boxes, containing weapons, were also to be parachuted overboard as part of the exercise.
Most of the soldiers had already jumped when Osipoff, standing a few inches from the plane's door, started to push out the last box. Somehow his parachute was suddenly opened. Instead of flowing free, Osipoff’s parachute now wrapped itself around the plane's tail wheel. He was now hanging below the tail of the plane. The soldiers struggled to pull Osipoff to safety, but they could not reach him. The plane was starting to run low on fuel, but an emergency landing with Osipoff dragging behind would certainly kill him. And pilots had no radio contact with the ground. To attract attention below, they eased the transport plane down to 300 feet and started circling the airport.
Meanwhile, Bill Lowrey and John McCants saw the trouble at the same time. As the plane circled once again, Lowrey yelled to McCants, “We must save him!” Lowrey's plane took off quickly. Within minutes, they made five approaches, but the air proved too bumpy(颠簸)to try for a rescue. Lowrey flew back once again and edged the plane closer. McCants, standing upright in the back, reached for Osipoff. He grabbed him at the waist and pulled Osipoff into the plane. Lowrey then nosed his plane inch by inch closer to the transport and used his propeller(螺旋桨)to cut the parachute lines. After hanging for 33 minutes between life and death, Osipoff was finally free.
Three weeks later, Lowrey and McCants were awarded for accomplishing “one of the most brilliant and daring rescues in history". Osipoff spent the next six months in hospital. The following January, he went back to parachute jumping.
