David is an excellent student and he comes from New York. His family was there until he finished eighth grade. David had no choice but to sleep on park benches. Being alone on the streets was scary. One thing kept David going: his determination to do well in school.
Even though many things were difficult in David’s life, one thing was going very well. David was accepted to a special high school called MC2STEM.It is a public school in Cleveland for kids who are extremely good at science. The school turned out a peaceful place for David. He especially enjoyed having the chance to learn by doing lots of projects.
High school wasn’t easy. But David says that the school helped him set high standards for himself. Even when he didn’t have a place to stay at night, David kept his focus on his schoolwork.
While he was homeless, David would sometimes sleep in the park during the day because it was safer. “ If you sleep in the daytime in the park, people won’t bother you,” he says. “you’re just taking a nap. It’s acceptable.” Then David would study through the night. He showered at a friend’s house when his friend’s parents were at work.
All his hard work paid off. In May 2011, David graduated second in his high school class. He was accepted to 22 colleges. He also won a scholarship form the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It will pay for all his college expenses.
Last fall, David began attending Harvard University, one of the top colleges in the US.”I found the perfect school for me.” He wrote in his blog.
In the future, David might look for a job at a company like Google. Even better, he would like to start his own company. David says, “ I want to work for myself.”

Dennis Sinar, 51, a doctor from New York, is quick to explain why he took a year- long break from his job. “ I was pretty burned out after practicing medicine for 26 years. I needed a recharge.” So he took a “ gap year”, from July 2011 to June 2012, to explore things like ancient buildings, and traditional Eastern medicine, in locations including Alaska, Nepal and Romania.
“ Taking a break from work is an excellent way for adults to go into a new career or refresh an old one,” said Holly Bull, president of Princeton,N,J. “ In recent years, mid-career breaks have been gaining more interest,” she said. A report on adult gap years published this year by a market research company also desbribed the potential American market for gap years as a “ sleeping giant.”
“ A gap year is a challenge for the older individual to step out of comfort zone and take a risk. I enjoyed that side most.” Said Dr.Sinar, who kept a daily blog about his experience. His time studying Eastern medicine at his old job, although he works fewer days. “ I use those experiences to provide my patients with more care,” he added. “ And I listen better than I did before.”
Geoge Garrian, chairman of the Department of Leadership and Human Capital Mangement at New York University , certainly agrees with Dr. Sinar. He said a gap-year experience could be worthwhile for employees and companies. For employees, investing in themselves and improving skill sets is a move that will benefit throughout their career. Although heat wasn't an issue at first,as it would become later, coming from New York to India would shock any foreign tourists.Quickly, however,I noticed how nice and helpful everyone was to us.The guest house we stayed in was full of people willing to help. The other two volunteers also helped to calm my nerves about being in India so far away from my home. After the first few days I was eager to get to Bal Ashram.
Upon getting to Bal Ashram,I was able to meet the boys, who called Bal Ashram their home. The center itself helps to rescue boys from child labor in various areas of India and give them a jump-start into education for free where they will then return to their families and continue their education. They are taught that without education there can be no future.Through education,Bal Ashram also builds a sense of community which can be seen with everyone who works and is taught here.Teaching English here to the children gave me great pride in knowing that these children would be helped within their own experiences here at Bal Ashram and their future lives. Each child was always willing to learn more.
Boys there were always seen laughing.Afternoon sports and nightly social events, including dancing, were just one of the many highlights with me and the children.Even my inner life was enriched, let alone theirs.Living in Bal Ashram also gave us a first hand view of village life in India as well as the culture and religion that surrounds this country.
My time spent at Bal Ashram was one I will never forget.Through the simplicity and life of the people and the children who are full of innocence and joy,I have taken with me so much more than when I arrived.

On her first day in New York City, teaching students from low-income families at an after-school program, Alyssa Kapasi noticed so many kids were lining up for free sandwiches and fruit in the cafeteria. Many of these poor students don’t get enough food to eat at home, so a free school lunch or a free after-school meal might be the most food they would get all day.
Kapasi, who graduated from private school, was shocked. Therefore, she was determined to help. “I want other kids to understand that if they meet a problem, they don’t have to wait to be an adult to salve it,” says Kapasi. She and a group of friends are now putting their programming skills ta work to create an app called Food for Thought, which will allow parents, students and even kind-hearted strangers to donate to a lunch account for a student in need at a nearby school.
About 20 million American kids receive free lunches. Two million more quality for reduced-price meals, and those students’ families may pay for part of their food. When they don’t have the money on any day. the students might have to choose an “alternative meal” such as a free cheese sandwich.
One clever feature of the app which is being supported by donation from companies and social investors—is that it provides anonymity (匿名) to lunch recipients and donors. To receive financial help, a family will need only a recommendation from a school administrator, and no one else knows.
“I want to make the application a platform where all users feel no shame in using it,” says Kapasi. She hopes to test the app in a school district next month. And then, she will devote herself to charity.
