Single-sex schools are better than mixed schools
Message 1 — posted by Jane, Amsterdam
I think mixed-sex schools are the only way for children to learn, because it's natural. In higher education and their working life, they will be mixed so it makes sense for them to be mixed at school. School should reflect the real world.
Message 2 — posted by Hans, Germany
My reaction to this is very clear. For me, single-sex schools are much better, and the statistics show that they get better exam results, particularly at secondary level. Anything which helps children pass exams must be a good thing.
Message 3 — posted by Bill, USA
Boys and girls learn in very different ways. I feel that they should be educated separately so teachers can focus on their different needs. The way I see it is that if you have a zoo, you don't put the lions in with the zebras!
Message 4 — posted by Martin, London
My view on this is that it doesn't really matter. What is important is the curriculum (课程), and keeping students interested. I was a teacher and we had a lot of truancy (逃学) to deal with, and problems with students missing lessons because they found them boring. Never have a timetable with Maths as the first class on Monday morning!
Message 5 — posted by Emily, Sydney
I don't think there is any question that mixed schools are better. There is too much competition at single-sex schools, which often means that students don't make enough progress. I also think there is more bullying (欺凌) at single-sex schools, where children are picked on because of the increased competition. Single-sex schools lead to a “dog eat dog” situation.
1.What is Jane's attitude towards single-sex schools?
A. Negative. B. Favorable.
C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.
2.Both Hans and Bill hold that _____.
A. boys and girls should be taught separately
B. teachers should meet students' different needs
C. schools should focus on students' exam results
D. mixed schools are better than single-sex schools
3.Martin stresses the importance of _____.
A. school management
B. students' time awareness
C. training students to obey rules
D. exciting students' interest in courses
4.Emily uses “dog eat dog” to show _____.
A. her support for single-sex schools

Girls do better at school
Around the world, girls do better than boys at school. These are the findings of a recent study that looked at the test results of 1.5 million 15-year-olds in 74 regions across the globe.
The level of gender equality in those regions made no difference to the results. Other causes, such as the income level of the region also had little impact on the findings. In only three regions – Colombia, Costa Rica and the Indian state Himachal Pradesh – was the opposite with boys doing better.
So what are the causes of girls’ stronger performance? In the UK, girls outperform boys in exams that are taken at the age of 15 or 16, called GCSEs(普通中等教育证书). According to education expert Ian Toone, this is down to the way girls and boys are brought up. “Boys are encouraged to be more active from an early age, whereas the restless movements of baby girls are calmed… Hence, girls develop the skill of sitting still for longer periods of time, which is useful for something like studying for GCSEs."
He goes on to say that boys often get together in larger groups than girls. Because of this they are more likely to be influenced by peer(同龄人) pressure and develop a gang mentality (帮派心态). He says that GCSEs require a lot of personal work and are not viewed as 'cool' in a childish culture.
This is backed up by research in the UK that says girls are out-performing boys at the age of five. So what is the answer? Should girls and boys be educated separately? Or do exams and school curricula need to be changed to better reflect boys’ skills? These are the questions facing educators in many countries.
1.What are the two things that made little or no difference to the results?
A. Gender equality and intelligence.
B. Gender equality and income level.
C. Income level and feelings.
D. Income level and intelligence.
2.According to Ian Toone, girls do better at school than boys because girls ______.
A. study harder B. are cleverer
C. can sit still longer D. are more restless
3.What does Ian Toone say can influence boys?
A. Gang mentality. B. Personal work.
C. Peer pressure. D. Childish culture.
4.What could be changed to include the skills boys have?
A. Exams and school curricula.
B. Ways of education and evaluation.
C. Outdoor activities and performances.
D. Separate education and different curricula.

Do you have any strong opinion on co-educational or single-sex schools?
A supporter of co-educational schools would probably say that schools should be like the societies they belong to .In Hong Kong , men and women mix socially on a day-to-day basis .In many fields men are even likely to have female bosses .It is ,therefore, desirable that boys and girls grow up together ,go to school together ,and prepare themselves for a society that does not value sexual separation.
Some would go on to argue further that growing up with members of the opposite sex is important for personal development .Regular contact (接触)can remove the strange ideas about the opposite-sex and lead to more natural relationships .Single-sex conditions are seen as leading to more extreme opinions, and possibly even as encouraging homosexuality(同性恋),though there is no proof that this is the case.
Those who are against coeducation often also fix their attention on the sexual side. Some parents fear that close contact with members of the opposite sex is dangerous for teenagers. They want their children to be attentive to their studies. Such parents feel uncomfortable with modern ways and the free mixing of the sexes.
A stronger argument comes from research into school results .Girls grow up earlier than boys ,tend to be more orderly and are likely to be better at languages .In a mixed class ,boys who might do well in a single-sex class become discouraged and take on the rule of troublemaker .Certainly in the UK this situation has greatly alarmed (惊动)the government for it to be encouraging co-educational schools to have some single-sex classes. In the UK the best schools are all single-sex, strongly suggesting that co-education is not the best answer. This may, however, not be as simple as it looks .It may simply be that the famous old schools that attract the best students happen to be single-sex , rather than that being single-sex makes them better schools.
1.In the third paragraph ,by saying “though there is no proof that this is the case” ,the writer means that ________.
A.students in single-sex schools will certainly become homosexual
B.students in co-educational schools cannot have extreme opinions
C.students in co-educational schools are likely to be homosexual
D.single-sex school conditions may or may not have effects on the students.
2.All the following arguments can be found in the passage EXCEPT that ________.
A.co-education can produce a society-like situation
B.co-educational schools may lead to love affairs between boys and girls
C.co-education will help develop a better understanding about the opposite sex
D.co-education can make boys perform well in mixed classes
3.Alarmed by the situation ,the UK government encourages________.
A.co-education
B.single-sex education
C.single-sex classes in co-educational schools
D.co-educational classes in single-sex schools
4.At the end of the passage the writer suggests that ________.
A.single-sex schools are the best schools in the UK
B.being single-sex does not necessarily make a school better
C.co-educational schools are better for both sexes in personal development
D.because boys cannot compete with girls in study ,they go to single-sex schools

I thought we all knew why independent school students do better than those in the state sector(公立学校). They have more money, more funding and better resources and they don’t have the more challenging students we get in the state sector.
That was before I became a teacher-researcher in a two-year project led by my college, aiming to find the best way to support high-ability students. With funding from the London Schools Excellence Fund, we teamed up with some of the country’s top private schools, like Eton and St Paul’s, as well as a number of state schools, to find out how to bring the knowledge-rich learning that characterizes independent schools into the state sector.
Before the project, I hadn’t had much contact with people who had been educated there. But the first thing I found when I visited was that teachers are the same. In the independent sector, they have challenges too—just different ones.
After two years, our research project has produced a huge set of findings.
One of the most useful findings was the importance of independent learning habits outside the classroom. I realized that although I was always telling students that they needed to do four to five hours of private study a week, they didn’t have a clear idea of what this could look like beyond making notes. So I set them different activities including reading articles, doing activities and completing examination questions.
I started to put much more emphasis on activities outside the classroom, like researching topics beyond the syllabus(教学大纲) or discussing things in the news. And I praised anyone who asked questions in class, so we created a culture where students were proud to ask a question rather than seeing it as a way of flagging up the fact that they hadn’t understood something.
My research is beginning to have a real influence. My students now come to class and tell me what they want to know about. But they no longer expect me to do the research—they want to find out for themselves. At the end of the year I gave students a questionnaire on independent learning. One wrote, “Independent learning would limit the help I got from other students. It helps you to think for yourself.”
1.What did the author say about independent school students before her research?
A. They were troublemakers.
B. They enjoyed excellent learning conditions.
C. They performed worse than state school students.
D. They faced the same challenges as state school students.
2.Why did the author join the project?
A. To introduce good learning methods to state schools.
B. To exchange teaching ideas with other teachers.
C. To partner with other schools in education.
D. To find enough funds for state schools.
3.What changes did the author make in her classes?
A. She focused on group learning. B. She worked out a different syllabus.
C. She encouraged independent learning. D. She carried out various activities in class.
4.How is the author’s research going?
A. It has made a big difference. B. It has failed to make progress.
C. It is questioned by her students. D. It involves many more students.

Why Old Books Are Better Than New Books
Books, both old and new, are great things, but our culture emphasizes that“newer” things are often better. It's hard to say no to your favorite contemporary writer or an amazing up-and-coming author's latest publication, but it's always worth picking up an old book between reading newer ones.1..
They are free
The old classics are usually free or deeply discounted at used book stores.2..The first obvious place would be your local library, which I think is the most important institution of our time. There are some lovely“free bookstores” online such as Project Gutenberg and Bartleby, which provide free e-books.
They show a different way of life from another time
Older books are valuable because they show life from another time.3. .Everyone knows about these stories. Each book has a tale to tell from that point in history. In this sense, reading an old book is almost like visiting an interpretative museum.
4.old classical books have stood out of time, but new books are still in a contemporary period with readers. "The ages bear evidence to the accuracy of their ideas, "Michael Hyatt writes about old books.5..There is no test for old novels to pass because the best ones have been passed on by many generations.
A.You'll remember it forever
B.They don't need to prove themselves
C.It doesn't mean it has lost its relevance
D.There are many ways to find these free books
E.Here's why old classic books stand out from new books
F.Ideas constantly float through our heads daily, but the best stand the test of time
G.Many books are stories or fairy tales from the past, like Beowulf and To Kill a Mockingbird

The works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth are “rocketboosters” to the brain and better than the other selfhelp books, researchers will say this week.
Scientists, psychologists and the English experts at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of Shakespeare and other classical writers has a beneficial effect on the mind, catches the reader’s attention and triggers moments of selfreflection.Using scanners, they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read the works by William Shakespeare,William Wordsworth,T.S Eliot and other classical writers.
They then “translated” the texts into more “straightforward”,modern language and again monitored the readers’ brains as they read the words.Scans showed that the more “challenging” articles and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the modern versions.Scientists were able to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and record how it “lit up” as the readers came across unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentence structures. This “lighting up” of the mind lasts longer than the initial electrical spark, shifting the brain to a higher speed, encouraging further reading.
The research also found that reading poetry,in particular, increases the activities in the right side of the brain,an area concerned with “autobiographical memory”,helping readers to reflect on their own experiences in light of what they have read. The experts said this meant the classics were more useful than selfhelp books.
Philip Davis,an English professor who has worked on the study with the university, will tell a conference this week:“Serious literature acts like a rocketbooster (火箭助推器) to the brain.”
“The research shows the power of classical literature to shift mental pathways,to create new thoughts, shapes and connections in the young and the old alike.”
