Last week, Education Secretary Arne Duncan declared war on paper textbooks. “Over the next few years,” he said in a speech at the National Press Club, “textbooks should be abandoned.” In their place would come a variety of digital-learning technologies, like e-readers and multi-media websites.

Such technologies certainly have their place. As both a teacher who uses paper textbooks and a student of urban history, I can't help but wonder what parallels exist between my own field and this sudden, wholesale abandonment of the technology of paper.

More than 40% of the insects around us could become extinct in next few decades. Simultaneously, the population of the adaptable and general species like that of houseflies, cockroaches and fleas is likely to bloom.

The biggest threat of Insect Armageddon comes from Germany, where 75% of insect population have declined in just 30 years and from Puerto Rico, where due to 2 degree rise in temperature, there has been 60 fold decline in invertebrate (无脊椎的)population since the 1970s.

However, the fact that insects getting extinct is a global crisis is undisputed. But the neat thing about insects is, we all can do our bit to save them. We all can maintain pesticide-free kitchen gardens and organic farms. We can plant flowers and trees and invite them to nest again.

Maybe this tragedy would have never arisen in the first place and you would not have to read this article, if the world had stopped using all kinds of pesticides immediately after Rachel Carson had published the Silent Spring. In the last few weeks, donations have been mailed to community organizations in and near Redford Township by the sender who only identifies as “Anonymous - 1679”, according to My Fox Detroit.

So far, envelopes, each filled with $1,000 cash, have been sent to the local library, an animal welfare non-profit, a civic and leadership training group, a credit union and the Redford Goodfellows, a group that helps needy families get holiday meals and gifts for their children.

Tail Waggers 1990 in nearby Livonia helps owners provide for their pets, offering low-cost vaccinations, a pet food pantry and assistance for pets with serious health problems. Their donation will go toward their new animal clinic, they told Fox.

Cindy Doyle, secretary for the Redford Goodfellows, said that their $1,000 donation will likely cover food, clothes and presents for 10 families; last year the organization served 225 families total.

“That money will go a long way to brighten the Christmas of several children this year,” the Redford Township Police posted on Facebook, on behalf of their department and the Good fellows.
