While your pet fish may appear to be ignorant of your presence, chances are that it knows you extremely well and can probably even identify you from a crowd of human faces! At least, that is the conclusion reached by scientists the University of Oxford in the U.K. and the University of Queensland in Australia, following an extensive study of the archerfish (喷水鱼), a species of tropical fish that can be found all the way from India to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia.
The ability to distinguish between human faces is a complex task. That’s because we all have the same basic features — two eyes sitting above a nose and a mouth. It’s only the subtle differences that make humans distinct from one another. Since this requires a combination of both visual sense and memory, researchers had always assumed that it was a skill possessed only by those with complicated brains, i.e., humans, a few select animals — such as horses, cows, dogs, monkeys and some birds, like pigeons.
To test if this assumption was accurate, a team of scientists led by Dr. Cait Newport, Marie Curie Research Fellow in the Department of Zoology at Oxford University, decided to study fish. The aquatic (水生的) animals have small brains that lack the neocortex(大脑新皮层), or neocortex-like structure, believed to help recognize the subtle differences between human facial features.
The team began by presenting four archerfish with images of two human faces. Initially, the fish spat randomly at both. However, they soon learned that pouring water at the one selected by the researchers earned them a food treat. After that, they focused primarily on that image. The researchers then took the experiment one step further, by introducing 44 other human faces to the mix.
To the researcher’s astonishment, the trained archerfish were able to recall the learned image almost 81% of the time. And this accuracy improved to 86% when the researchers made the identification even harder, by replacing the colored photos with a set of black and white images and hiding the shape of the head.
1.What is the conclusion of the study made by the scientists from the universities?
A. Some fish may ignore your presence.
B. Some fish can recognize your faces.
C. Some fish have complicated brains.
D. Some fish have large brains.
2.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The ability to distinguish between human faces.
B. A combination of visual sense and memory.
C. The ability of memorizing complicated things.
D. The ability of telling beasts from birds.
3.In the experiment, the researchers trained the archerfish _______.
A. by taking photos of fish
B. by improving people’s images
C. by rewarding them with food

While you may be doing everything right, ignoring just one or two steps in the process may keep you from getting a job, especially in this fierce market. Here is a checklist that covers some of the major links in the job-search chain.
THE RESUME—Make sure it is up-to-date and tailored to the types of jobs you are seeking for. Have someone else look at your resume. If you cannot afford a career coach, give your resume to friends or family members to scrutinize. Have copies of your resume printed so that you are ready to hand them out at interviews.
COVERING LEITERS—Maybe you've set up a few basic styles in advance, but that's not enough. Each covering letter should be designed to suit the job for which you are applying.
THE WARDROBE (衣橱)—Check your wardrobe to ensure that you have the appropriate professional dress, including shoes, ready for interview.
NETWORKING—Don't isolate yourself from others. Network through e-mail messages, phone calls, appointments and meetings keep you in touch with the outside world and prevent you from becoming depressed.
APPLICATION—A glance at huge online job sites isn't usually the best way to find a job. You are more likely to succeed through the people you know via networking.
INTERVIEWS—If you've got plenty of interviews but no return calls or job offers, take a look at your interviewing skills. This is one area where investing in a career coach may pay off. But if you can't afford one, try to find a job group or service that conducts free mock (模拟) interviews.
SUPPORT SYSTEMS—Finally, recognize that looking for job is rather difficult. Even at the best of times, a job hunt is often about rejection, and that can be hard to endure. Staying in touch with family, friends, professional networks and fellow job seekers can help you to maintain a positive attitude and a sense of perspective.

Five steps to take if your child is being bullied
51 The worst thing you can do is ignore it. Too often parents feel children and teens need to “work things out” on their own. If the problem is ignored, your child’s self-esteem will become unhealthy, he will be hurt mentally or physically, and he could become a bully himself.
Here are five steps you can take if your child is having problems with a bully:
52 This is an important first step and will help your child trust that you are able to help him with his problem. Accept what he has to say at face value by using your active listening skills.
Let your child know that he is not alone. 53 Reassure your child that he is not the problem. Nothing he did caused the bully to go after him.
If your child is being threatened in a physical or illegal way at school, report the problem. Your child may not want you to do this, or the school may not take it seriously, but violence cannot be tolerated. 54 You will need to model assertive (果断的) behavior by alerting those in charge where the bullying is taking place.
Teach your child assertive behavior and how to ignore routine teasing. Let them know it is okay to say “No.” sometimes even friends bully, so letting your child know they can be true to their own feelings and say “No” can go a long way.
55 Giving up possessions or giving in to a bully in anyway encourages the bully to continue. Identify ways for your child to respond to a bully---showing assertive but not aggressive behavior---and role-play them.
A. Believe what your child tells you.
B. Encourage your child not to give in to a bully.
C. Praise your child for being brave enough to talk about it.
D. Bullying is a terrible situation for a child to have to cope with.
E. If you choose not to do anything, that is what you’re teaching your child.
F. Most children have to deal with some type of bullying behavior at one time or another.
G. If your child comes to you because a bully is bothering him, you need to pay close attention to the problem.

This way you can easily get what you need without taking an unplanned break. Plan out your study sessions in advance. Think about the time you'll need for each task, add 10% extra time for insurance, and then schedule blocks for your tasks. 3. Remember to include short breaks every hour or so.
Break up difficult tasks into smaller steps. Tasks such as “Study for History Final” or “Write Term Paper” can seem unapproachable. Instead of getting confused and upset, divide big tasks into small ones If you’re studying for a final of a course, start by looking over past tests and quizzes. 4.Smaller study tasks may also include creating outlines that summarize textbook chapters.
Do your best to space out your study sessions instead of cramming (突击).Whenever possible, give yourself time to study a little bit at a time. It’s better to study for 3 separate 3-hour sessions instead of 1 marathon 9-hour session. 5.

While an entire month free of homework or tests may sound too good to be true, that is exactly what the students at Sturenskolan School in Boden, Sweden were treated to in April. What’s more, if the results of the experiment prove encouraging, starting 2019, the middle schoolers will never have to worry about after-school work or tests, aside from the national examinations, which are compulsive for students across the country.
The school’s principal, Petronella Sirkka, who came up with the idea, said, “We are constantly receiving new reports that our children feel bad. And that’s because they have a high level of stress all the time. This is our way of trying to reduce that stress.”
The educator says that while banning homework and tests sounds radical(激进的), it makes sense given the changes in the curriculum and approaches to education. While in the past students were primarily subjected to memorizing facts, learning today is all about reflection and analysis. As a result, it is often harder for kids, especially those with little support at home, to comprehend the material by themselves.
Sirkka is not the only one who believes after-school work does not help students learn. In March 2018, another principal in Canada also decided to do away with homework. They hope parents will spend the extra time reading to their kids.
While the long-term impact of the recent decisions made by the two educators remains to be seen, the experiment has already proved successful in Finland which has done away with homework, grades, and even teaching by subjects for many years. Yet, Finnish students always rank high in the PISA(Programme for International Student Assessment) tests especially in math and science but they have the least homework! Hopefully, it will only be a matter of time before US educators follow their lead and ban after-school work as well!
1.The students at Sturenskolan School had no homework in April because ________.
A.the headmaster was experimenting with her idea
B.they needed to do some experiments during the month
C.they were busy preparing for the national examinations
D.the headmaster had to carry out the government’s policy
2.What makes children’s learning hard nowadays?
A.Children have to do more analyzing.
B.The approach to education is complex.
C.Children get no support at home and school.
D.There are more facts to memorize.
3.What does Petronella Sirkka most likely advise parents to do?
A.Help children with their homework.
B.Free children from after-school housework.
C.Spend more time reading to their children.
D.Communicate with teachers from time to time.
4.What can we infer about the students in Finland?
A.They study the hardest at school.
B.They have a more relaxing school life.
C.They enjoy great success after graduation.
D.They all have a talent for math and science.
