Depressed people can be very difficult to be around, and yet they need more than the usual amount of support and understanding from their friends and family.
The anger and lack of concern that a depressed person may have for people close to him or her can be very disturbing to someone who's trying to help.At such times, the sincerity of a friend or a family member is questioned when the depressed person doesn't feel worthy of someone's friendship.Withdrawal from others can make it nearly impossible to encourage a depressed person to enter into activities that may help pull him or her out of the depression.
It is frequently difficult for a depressed person to carry on a conversation.Attempts to help may be met with defensiveness and verbal attacks. While being supportive and understanding, the friend of a family member must be careful not to do too many things for the depressed person. There is a very thin line between being supportive and being overly protective.Too much“doing for” can be a disservice(帮倒忙).
You can best help a friend or relative who is depressed by considering the following points:
◆Do not moralize.Don't pressure him or her to “put on a happy face,” or to “snap out of it.” Often the person will feel even worse after hearing such words.
◆When you are alone with your depressed friend, you might say something like,“I've noticed lately that you seem down.I care about you and would like to listen to what you're thinking about.” Then be a good listener.
◆Don't say,“I know exactly how you feel.” You probably don't.But if you've had similar experiences, sharing those may help.Say things like,“This happened to me.It might help you.” Or “I know some of what you must be feeling.”
◆Urge him or her to get professional help if necessary.Offer to accompany your friend on the first visit if it will be easier for the person.

If you’re anything like the average American, you probably check your smartphone more than50 times per day as a 2018 study found. 1. In fact, The University of Arizona found back in2012 that cell phones carry 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, largely because toilet seats are typically cleaned more frequently while personal electronics are largely overlooked.
As the novel corona virus (新型冠状病毒) continues to spread, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization are advising the general public to wash hands often and disinfect (消毒) frequently touched objects and surfaces. 2.
But cleaning your phone can be tricky, considering many of the standard cleaning products you’d typically use for disinfection could potentially damage your mobile device. You may want to wipe down your phones screen with some rubbing alcohol or a disinfectant wipe. 3. These phones have a coating on then to prevent oil or grease from your hand from sticking on the phone. Using alcohol or those types of everyday solutions directly on a phone, on its glass can harm it. 4.
That lines up with the advice Apple and Samsung offer which warn not to use cleaning products. 5. If you need to disinfect your smartphone, consider looking into a UV light to kill the bacteria.
A.Avoid using alcohol.
B.But in doing so, you risk damaging your devices screen.
C.That means keeping your phone clean is important as well.
D.You should still be cautious when exposing them to liquids.
E.Instead use a micro fiber cloth and dampen it lightly with soap and water.
F.And each time you do, your mobile device picks up more bacteria from your hands.
G.Both companies say wiping your phone down with a soft cloth is the best way to clean it.

The regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻). That is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the user’s IQ. This rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as “infomania”. The research conducted by Hewlett Packard, the technology company, has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men.
It is concluded that too much use of modern technology can damage a person’s mind. It can cause a constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand. The report also added that, in a long term, the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life. At a microcellular level, the complex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences.
Too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a person’s mind, but to their social relationship. 1100 adults were interviewed during the research. More than 62 per cent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. Half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so. It is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting one’s characteristics. Nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude.
The effects on IQ were studied by Dr Glenn Wilson, a psychologist at University of London. “This is a very real and widespread phenomenon,” he said. “We have found that infomania will damage a worker’s performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life. Companies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working.”
1.We can learn from the passage that “infomania” ______.
A. has a positive influence on one’s IQ
B. results in the change of part of the brain
C. lies in the problem of lack of concentration
D. is caused by too much use of modern technology
2.The research mentioned in the passage is most probably about ______.
A. the important function of advanced technology
B. the damage to one’s brain done by unhealthy habits
C. the relevance between IQ and use of modern technology
D. the relationship between intelligence and working effectiveness
3.The underlined word “scrutinized” probably means “______”.
A. examined carefully B. copied patiently
C. corrected quickly D. admitted freely
4.What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The regular use of text messages and e-mails can be compared to smoking marijuana.
B. The regular use of text messages and e-mails can harm your IQ.
C. Modern technology can damage a person’s mind.
D. Electronic messages have side effects on the user’s life.

★The regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana(大麻). Psychologists say that sending/receiving messages or looking through the many menu options your mobile phone has, lowers a person’s IQ by almost 10 points. British researchers have named this situation “infomania”. Instead of fixed on what they are doing, people’s minds are constantly focused on reacting to the technology surrounding them. This means they don’t pay full attention to the work they are paid to do. The report also added that the brain can not do so many things at once. If you try to do too many things, mistakes begin to occur. And while modern technology can have huge benefits, too much use can be damaging not only to a person’s mind, but to their social life.
★The more televisions 4-year-old children watch, the more likely they are to become bullies later on in school, a newest U.S. study said. At the same time, children whose parents read to them, take them on outings and just generally pay attention to them are less likely to become bullies, said the report from the University of Washington. Researchers also found gaps in learning and understanding such things as social skills early in life makes it more difficult for children to relate with other children. Watching violence on television leads to aggressive behavior.
★You could soon be able to add your favorite perfume to your e-mails. UK net provider Telewest Broadband is testing a system to let people send e-mails over the Internet with sweet smell. It has developed a kind of hi-tech air freshener that plugs into a PC and sprays a smell linked to the message. Telewest says it could be used by supermarkets to attract people with the smell of fresh bread or by holiday companies seeking to stir up images of sun-kissed beachers.

More than half of American teenagers and young adults volunteered last year, and the best way to join in this group turns out to be peer pressure: Three quarters of people ages 13 to 22 whose friends volunteer regularly also do so, which is nearly twice the number of those who participate in voluntary activities based on their concern about particular social
problems. Those were the key findings of new research results published by DoSomething. org, a group working to get young people involved in social change. "
The study, based on data from 4, 363 young people, found that the most common form of support by volunteers was assistance with fundraising. 38 percent of those in the survey said they helped with solicitations (募捐),leading the study's authors to conclude: "Young people are a secret weapon. A persuasive donation speech from an enthusiastic teen is a way more influential than a cold call or that newsletter you were thinking about sending."
The study also found a gender (性另ij) divide in volunteer activities. Boys were more likely to undertake physical activities such as environmental cleanup or working with younger children in sports, while girls were more likely to help the homeless and other needy people or to work with arts groups.
The researchers say the responses to the survey pointed out many ways that nonprofits can do a better job of getting young people to volunteer. Among their suggestions:
Offer ways to socialize. The very first thing that many young people think of in choosing volunteer activities is having a chance to interact with friends, especially those of the opposite sex.
"Think of volunteering like a high-school party," the researchers write. "Volunteering, like everything else, is about joining in, making friends, and having a good time."
1.The passage above mainly talks about ______ .
A. what a research about voluntary activities finds out
B. why young people take part in volunteer work
C. how young people can be persuaded to volunteer
D. where most young volunteers would like to work
2.Most young people are likely to take part in voluntary activities because _____.
A. they are concerned about particular social problems
B. their friends of the same age volunteer
C. they want to influence more people to volunteer
D. their assistance can help those in need
3.At the end of the passage, the writer would probably continue to list _____.
A. more ways for young people to socialize
B. more reasons to get young people to volunteer
C. more tips on getting young people involved in volunteering
D. more differences between different genders in volunteering

Women are on their way to holding more than half of all American jobs. The latest government report shows that their share of nonfarm jobs nearly reached fifty percent in September.
Not only have more and more women entered the labor market over the years, but the depression has been harder on men. In October the unemployment rate for men was almost eleven percent compared to eight percent for women.
Industries that traditionally use lots of men have suffered deep cuts. For example, manufacturing and building lost more jobs last month. But health care and temporary employment services have had job growth. Both of those industries employ high percentages of women.
Thirty years ago, women earned sixty-two cents for every dollar that men earned. Now, for those who usually work full time, women earn about eighty percent of what men earn. And women hold fifty-one percent of good-paying management and professional jobs.
Yet a study released Thursday said men still hold about nine out of every ten top positions at the four hundred large companies in California. The results have remained largely unchanged in live years of studies from the University of California, Davis.
Also, a new research paper in the journal Sex Roles looks at the experiences of women who are the main earners in their family. Rebecca Meisenbach at the University of Missouri in Columbia interviewed fifteen women. She found they all valued their independence and many enjoyed having the power of control, though not all wanted it.
But they also felt pressure, worry and guilt. Partly that was because of cultural expectations that working women will still take care of the children. Also, men who are not the main earners may feel threatened.
The job market continues to suffer the effects of last year’s financial crash. Now, a judgment has been reached in the first case involving charges of criminal wrongdoing on Wall Street.
Last week, the government lost its case against two managers at Bear Stearns, the first investment bank to fail last year. A jury found Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin not guilty of lying to investors.
The hedge funds they supervised lost their value in two thousand seven. But jurors said there was no clear evidence that they meant to mislead investors.
The Justice Department continues to investigate other companies.
1.Why is the unemployment rate for men higher.
A. Because there are more men workers in industries.
B. Because many industries mainly employing men now don’t need so many workers.
C. More and more women take the place of men.
D. Because health care and temporary employment services don’t employ men.
2.It can be inferred from the passage that __________.
A. women haven’t got complete equality as men
B. only by becoming the main earners in their family can women gain a high position
C. all women now value independence and the power of control
D. taking care of children is now shared by men and women
3.Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Men hate that women earn more money.
B. It is commonly believed that women should take care of children.
C. The job market has recovered from the effect of the financial crisis.
D. Now women working full time earn more than men.
4. Why does the government accuse two managers?
A. They contributed to the financial crash. B. They led a corrupt life.
C. They lied to investors. D. A jury found them misleading investors.
