United States health officials say an estimated 80,000 people died of influenza (流感) and problems resulting from the flu last winter, making it the worst season since 1977. The director for the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the number to The Associated Press. Health experts were expecting the winter of 2017-2018 to be a bad year for flu deaths, but not that.
Doctor William Schaffner is an expert on vaccines, at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Schaffner noted that 80,000 deaths are nearly twice as much as what health officials once considered a “bad year”.
CDC officials say that between 12,000 and 56,000 Americans die every year from flu-related causes, but they do not have an exact count of how many people die from the flu each year. Influenza is a relatively common disease and not always listed on death records as the official cause of death. While last winter was a bad flu season in the U.S., it was not the worst. The 1918 flu lasted nearly two years. Historians estimate that the disease was to blame for between 500,000 to 700,000 deaths during that period. The exact number is still not known.
One thing that made the 2017-2018 flu season so bad was that the flu virus was strong. Usually the disease kills the very young, the very old or those who are already sick. However, last winter, the flu killed many healthy Americans. Another thing that made the flu season so deadly was that the flu vaccine was not as effective as experts had predicted. Drug makers have made changes to the vaccine. Even though the vaccine did not work well last year, health experts still strongly suggest getting vaccinated.
1.What can we learn about influenza in the first paragraph?
A.The winter of 2017-2018 saw the deadliest flu in history.
B.Effective cures should be found to deal with influenza.
C.Health experts had assumed flu would be severer.
D.More people died of influenza than expected in the winter of 2017-2018.
2.How many deaths did the health officials expect in a bad year?
A.80,000. B.40,000.
C.60,000. D.20,000.
3.Why can't CDC officials give an exact number of deaths from flu?
A.Because flu is always considered as a common disease.
B.Because people usually don't take flu seriously.
C.Because CDC officials are unwilling to count the deaths.
D.Because flu is not always listed on death records.
4.What do experts recommend people to do in the last paragraph?
A.Change the vaccine. B.Avoid using vaccine.
C.Get vaccinated. D.Do research on vaccine.

United States health officials are urging people to stop using electronic cigarettes, known as e-cigarettes. The call to action came after such products were linked to health problems. Five deaths have also been reported. E-cigarettes are a popular substitute for smoking products. The electronic devices heat liquid that includes flavoring, nicotine and other chemicals into vapor—very small particles that users breathe in. Nicotine is found in many plants, including tobacco. E-cigarettes or similar devices also can provide THC or other substances to users. THC is the natural chemical present in marijuana(大麻) plants that gives users the mental state known as a “high”.
E-cigarettes are said to be safer than normal cigarettes because they do not create the cancer-causing byproducts of burning tobacco.Yet health officials say e-cigarette users have reported shortness of breath and other breathing problems, such as coughing and chest pain. Some have been sick to the stomach, felt very tired, suffered weight loss or developed high body temperatures. One report noted that most of the 53 illnesses reported in Illinois and Wisconsin were related to THC vaping(气化) products. But nearly 20 percent of the patients inhaled(吸入)substances like nicotine from e-cigarettes. Most of the reported cases were of young men.
The report found that, “Since no single product or substance has been associated with the illness, persons should consider not using e-cigarettes while this investigation is ongoing.” Last November, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, reported that “e-cigarette use increased considerably among U.S. middle and high school students during 2017—2018.” Among high school students, it found e-cigarette use rose from 220,000 students in 2011 to 3.05 million in 2018.
On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA gave a warning to JUUL Labs, maker of the best-selling e-cigarettes. The FDA accused the company of illegally marketing its products as being “safer than cigarettes” without the agency's approval. In a statement, the FDA's acting commissioner said that, “JUUL has ignored the law, and has made some of these statements in school to our nation's youth.” A JUUL spokesman said the company is studying the FDA's comments and “will fully cooperate”.
1.Which of the following can best describe e-cigarettes?
A.Deadly. B.Harmless.

2.What change will be caused when smokers inhale e-cigarettes containing THC?
A.They will be healthier.
B.They will lose weight.
C.They will feel excited.
D.They will be peaceful.
3.What information about JUUL Labs can we get from the last paragraph?
A.Students became its main marketing targets.
B.FDA didn't agree on its way of promoting its products.
C.It completely denied what it was accused of.
D.E-cigarettes were invented by it.
4.What can be the best title of the passage?
A.Say “No” to cigarettes
B.A sharp rise of e-cigarettes use among young people.

Joseph Goldberger was a doctor for the United States Public Health Service and he was an advocate for scientific and social recognition of the links between poverty and disease. In 1914, Goldberger was asked by US Surgeon General Rupert Blue to study a skin disease that was killing thousands of people in the South. The disease was pellagra (糙皮病).
Goldberger traveled to the state of Mississippi where many people suffered from pellagra. He studied the victims and their families. Most of the people lived a hard life. The doctor came to believe that the disease didn’t pass on from one to another, but was instead related to food. He received permission from the state governor to test this idea at a prison. Prisoners were offered pardons if they took part. One group of prisoners received their usual foods, mostly corn products. A second group ate meat, fresh vegetables and drank milk. Members of the first group developed pellagra. The second group did not.
But some medical researchers refused to accept Goldberger’s idea. For the South, pellagra was more than simply a medical problem. There were other things, including Southern pride.
So Goldberger had himself injected (注射) with blood from a person with pellagra. He also took liquid from the nose and throat of a pellagra patient and put them into his own nose and throat. He even swallowed pills that contained skin from pellagra patients. An assistant also took part in the experiments. So did Goldberger’s wife. None of them got sick.
Joseph Goldberger died of cancer in 1929. He was fiftyfive years old. Several years later, researchers discovered the exact cause of pellagra: a lack of vitamin B3 known as niacin.

A.Pellagra wasn’t so terrible.
B.Pellagra could be cured.
C.Pellagra didn’t spread.
D.Pellagra wasn’t a medical problem.
3.Why did some medical researchers refuse to accept Goldberger’s idea?
A.Goldberger’s idea sounds ridiculous.
B.They have done their own research.

Experts say there are about 6,500 languages spoken throughout the world. But the United Nations estimates that about half of these languages are in danger of disappearing.
One non-profit organization seeking to save world languages is a New York-based group called Wikitongues.Officials from Wikitongues say the organization has a simple goal:to provide the tools and support that people need to save their languages.
Udell is the co-founder of Wikitongues. He said when a language disappears, many other things can go away as well. For example, parts of a community’s culture, knowledge and identity can also be lost.Because of this.Udell believes the process of bringing languages back must be done by community members themselves,“from the ground up,”he said.
“There is no way an outside organization can save someone’s language for them.”
Wikitongues was launched in 2016 as an open internet collection of world languages. The self-described“community”is operated by volunteers from around the world. The collection is in the form of language videos that people add to the Wikitongues website.
There are currently more than 400 languages and dialects represented on Wikitongues’YouTube channel.Udell says more than 1,500 people from 70 different countries have added videos to the system.
“We have people from India who record dozens of languages, which is beyond their own.”he said.
One of Wikitongues’volunteers is Kolokwe, who lives in Namibia. His native language is Subiya, however,he does not get the chance to speak his native language every day.Like many other educated people from his area,he speaks a lot of English and Afrikaans.
Kolokwe is hoping his involvement with Wikitongues call help keep Subiya and other African languages from going extinct. He wants the world to know about his language. But his goal goes beyond just sharing his language with others through video. He is also working to create a dictionary and language teaching materials that can be used in schools.
1.What is tile result of languages disappearing?
A. People are uncertain about who they are.
B. All the customs and beliefs are still existing.

A. It was founded by the United Nations.
B. Officials from it want to make money.
C. It contributes to saving languages.
D. 1500 languages are uploaded on its website.
3.Why is Kolokwe involved in volunteering?
A. He has no chance to speak his native language.
B. He dislikes speaking English and Afrikaans.
C. He wants to stop his native language dying out.
D. He hopes to teach his language in school himself.
4.What can we infer from the opinion of Udell?
A. The majority of languages have been saved.
B. Wikitongues can save languages disappearing.

The United States space agency, NASA. says its Mars exploration vehicle recently recorded a high level of methane (甲烷) gas on the planet. The discovery is exciting because the presence of methane gas could support the case for life on Mars.
NASA's Curiosity vehicle recently recoded the largest level of methane ever measured during its seven-year Mars mission.
Methane has no color or smell. A special instrument on Curiosity's Man Science Laboratory recorded the increased gas level. The device measures levels of chemical elements and gases in the Marian atmosphere. In addition to methane, the instrument can record levels of water and carbon dioxide.
Nearly all the methane gas found in Earth's atmosphere is produced by living thing. It usually comes from animal and plant life. But it can also be formed by geological(地质的) processes, such as interactions. between rocks and water.
It was not the first time Curiosity had found methane gas in the Martian atmosphere. About a year ago, NASA announced that Curiosity had discovered sharp seasonal increases in the gas. This time, NASA said the measured methane gas level was clearly larger than any others observed in the past. "It's exciting because microbial (微生物的) life is an important source of methane on Earth," NASA said in a statement announcing the discovery.
However, Curiosity's team carried out a follow-up methane experiment that showed a sharp drop in levels of the gas. That number was "close to the background levels Curiosity sees all the time." NASA said. The rise and fall of the methane gas levels left NASA scientists with more questions than answers.
"The methane mystery continues," said Ashwin Vasavada. Curiosity's project scientist, "We're more motivated than ever to keep measuring and put our brains together to figure out how methane behaves in the Marian atmosphere."
1.What do we know about methane go?
A.It is a must to living things. B.It can be found everywhere.
C.It smells like carbon dioxide. D.It's mainly from biological activity.
2.What do the explorations on Mans tell us?
A.Humans have known much about Mars.
B.There will be more methane gas on Mars.
C.There is no progress in the 7 year's research.
D.The level of methane gas on Mars is not stable.
3.What does the discovery mean in NASA's view?
A.There may exist life on Mars.
B.Methane gas on Mars has a sudden increase.
C.The mystery about Mars will be solved soon.
D.They're known how methane as is formed on Mans.
4.How do the NASA's scientists feel about their future exploration?
A.Aimless. B.Confident.
C.Stressed. D.Serious.

Market analysts in the United States have recently been quoted as saying that the biggest threat to the luxury (奢侈品) industry in the US is the tech industry. This is according to an article by fellow journalist Ashley Lutz. Her suggestion is sound. The main idea of her article is that products from Tiffany & Co. find their biggest competition not from other luxury brands but from companies like Apple. Lutz points out that luxury products are often only for “show,” while the attraction behind tech products is functionality.
You find few people in the United States today willing to purchase luxury goods at full price. It didn’t use to be that way. Luxury goods used to be actually exclusive. That meant you needed to travel to the right store to purchase them, and you didn’t even have the option of getting a deal.
Today, no one wants to pay full price for luxury goods. People have the unfortunate belief that fakes (赝品) somehow are equal to originals, and if you can’t get a deal on eBay, Amazon, or in an outlet store, purchasing a luxury product probably isn’t worth it. Luxury brands struggle to remain high-end (高档的) images despite the reality that the American consumer is motivated much more by discounts than they are by brand names or image.
Yet people stand in line to pay full price for a new product from Apple and crowds gather to hear about a new smart phone. While electronics are updating every day, people are purchasing technology at full prices much more than they are purchasing luxury goods. What are high-tech makers doing right that luxury makers are pitifully failing at?
Carefully looking at the situation, it would appear as if the Internet didn’t hurt the luxury industry, expectation from the consumers did. What people want these days more than anything is stuff that does something. They want cars that drive, shoes that are comfortable, games that are fun to play, screens that are beautiful to look at, tools that are useful, and entertainment that is entertaining. Little of that fits into what the luxury industry has typically offered with its status, image, and fine materials. The sad reality is that luxury products aren’t that luxury any more.
1.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Nobody likes luxury goods any more.
B. Luxury goods are of poor quality nowadays.
C. Tech products become the new “luxury goods”.
D. Iphones have taken the place of luxury products.
2.The underlined word “exclusive” in paragraph 2 means _______.
A. unique and with no bargain B. low in price
C. hard to find D. easy to sell
3.From paragraph 3 we can know that _______.
A. people have found that some luxury goods are fakes
B. people can buy luxury goods at a low price on eBay
C. luxury brands will give up high-end images
D. consumers prefer brand names to discounts
4.What do people pay most attention to nowadays?
A. The Internet service. B. The images of luxuries.
C. The function of products. D. The expectation from the consumers.
