The Slade Summer School Foundation course is ...

The Slade Summer School Foundation course is an excellent introduction to the study of contemporary art. It sustains and develops students’ abilities and interests over a ten-week period and offers an opportunity for contemporary Fine Art practice. Entry is open to students of all levels and experience.

Course Structure

The course begins with a structured introduction to Fine Art. We begin by exploring the nature of drawing and its fundamental use for the artist and follow this with an in-depth investigation into processes of making and the application of ideas. Initially as a group, then individually, students will generate work from supplied and found materials.

Each student will have a space in the Woburn studios for individual studio-based enquiry.

Workshops

Alongside individual research and practice there will be a number of optional specialist workshops taught by invited artists as the course develops. These include subjects such as: order in space, color and light, technical research, etc.

Materials

For the introductory period and for the later workshops, most of the basic materials are provided, however, as independent working progresses students will be expected to provide their own materials.

This year’s Foundation course will be taking place at Slade School of Fine Art, Woburn Studios in Bloomsbury, close to the British Museum and the galleries of Soho and the West End. The studios host the postgraduate Painting programme and was previously home to the Courtauld Gallery until 1989.

The Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans has added an unconventional course to its curriculum. Medical students can now take cooking classes in addition to their usual training. This is intended to improve doctors’ nutritional knowledge and encourage them to use food to prevent or cure illnesses.

According to a survey，most medical students in the U.S. receive on average 20 hours of nutritional education throughout their entire education. This is an extremely low number，especially when one considers that diet is at the core(核心 )of many modern Western diseases. Training doctors to cook，however，takes nutritional education to a whole new level. Not only will doctors be able to explain which foods are best to eat，but they will also understand how to prepare them. Tulane medical students prepare for teaching future patients by offering free cooking classes to New Orleans residents—a mutually beneficial arrangement for everyone who shares that food.

Fortunately，the model seems to be catching on. Already two other medical schools have licensed the curriculum and are adding it to their courses. Tulane also offers nutritional training for health-focused chefs from a nearby cooking school，which makes a lot of sense. After all，with the frequency with which North Americans eat out，we could all benefit from chefs who know how to balance nutrition with great taste.

The end of the school year is in sight — Christmas cards, candy canes and of course, end of year reports.

While most parents welcome an assessment of their kids' performance, they do not expect their own input to be evaluated. But a school in the UK is changing that. As well as assessing their students, they are dishing out grades to mums and dads. Parents that are really involved in their kid's education are rewarded with an A, and parents that haven't done their bit get a disappointing D.
