Good tool design is important in the prevention of overuse injuries. Well-designed tools and equipment will require less force to operate them and prevent awkward(别扭的)hand positions. They will allow the worker to keep the elbows(肘)next to the body to prevent damage to the shoulder and arm.
Overuse injuries can therefore be prevented or reduced if the employer provides, and workers use:
●power tools rather than having to use muscle(肌肉)power
●tools with specially designed handles that allow the wrist(手腕)to keep straight (See figure 1). This means that hands and wrists are kept in the same position as they would be if they were hanging relaxed at a person’s side
Figure1. Bend the tool, not the wrist
●tools with handles that can be held comfortably by the whole hand. This means having a selection of sizes—remember that tools that provide a comfortable firm Hold for a person with a very large hand may be awkward for someone with a very small hand. This is a particularly important consideration for women who may use tools originally designed for men.
●tools that do not press fingers (or flesh) between the handles, and whose handles do not have sharp edges or a small surface area.

America's Best Designed City
Named as the “20-Minute City”and”America’s Best Designed City”,Buffalo’s world-class design makes getting around an easy job.Forbes magazine declared Buffalo the “best U.S. city” for commuting.
In fact, Buffalo’s average commute time—it has been clocked at 20 minutes—is the second-shortest of the country’s 52 largest cities. That translates to an enhanced quality of life for our faculty, staff and students, who enjoy stress-free travel regardless of where they’re headed around the region.
Best Planned City
Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture(园林设计), called Buffalo “the best planned city, as to its streets, public places, and grounds, in the United States, if not the world." Visit us and you'll be surprised at our tremendous geography, street designs, parks, neighborhoods and architecture.
Public Transportation
Buffalo’s Metro Bus provides quick, economical service throughout the city and suburbs. The Metro Rail line connects UB’s(Buffalo University) South Campus with downtown Buffalo, including UB's Downtown Campus, and the neighborhoods in between. Rides above ground are free in downtown Buffalo. UB employees who are regular commuters might wish to take advantage of the NYS-Ride program that allows pretax dollars to be used for monthly passes.

Step into Moving to Mars, an exhibition of Mars mission and colony design at London’s Design Museum, and immediately you have good reasons not to move there.
Frightening glowing wall-texts announce that Mars wasn’t made for you; that there is no life and precious little water: that, dressed in a spacesuit, you will never touch, taste or smell the planet you now call “home”. As Lisa Grossman wrote for New Scientist a couple of years ago, “What’s different about Mars is that there is nothing to do there except try not to die”.
It is an odd beginning for such a celebratory exhibition, but it provides a valuable, dark background against which the rest of the show can sparkle (闪耀)—a show that is ,as its chief manager Justin remarks,“not about Mars ; this is an exhibition about people”.
Moving along, there is a quick yet clear flash through what the science-fiction writer Robinson calls “the history of Mars in the human mind”. A Babylonian clay tablet and a Greek vase speak to early ideas about the planet. A poster for the original Total Recall film reminds us of Mars’s psychological threat.
The main part of the show is our current plans for the Red Planet. There are real spacesuits and models of 3D-printed Martian settlements and suitable clothing and furniture. Mission architectures and engineering sketches line the walls. Real hammers meant for the International Space Station are wall-mounted beside a low-gravity table that has yet to leave, and may indeed never leave, Earth.
This, of course, is the great strength of approaching science through design: reality and assumption can be given equal visual weight, drawing us into an informed conversation about what it is that we actually want from a future on Mars.
1.What is the text mainly about?
A.How to move to Mars. B.How to survive on Mars.
C.What preparations we made for Mars. D.What the exhibition of Mars truly tells us.
2.What can we learn from Lisa Grossman?
A.It’s impossible to live on Mars. B.It’s no good settling on Mars.
C.You have nothing to do living on Mars. D.You can live on Mars in spacesuit.
3.What does the exhibition focus on?
A.The current plans for Mars. B.The advantages of living on Mars.
C.The early ideas about Mars. D.The history of Mars in the human mind.
4.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.An experience. B.An opinion. C.A fantasy. D.A solution.

The true purpose of a business, Peter Drucker said, is to create and keep customers. “Customer value” has several definitions. I use the ______ to mean the total lifetime value of a company’s customer base. Companies can increase this value by ______ more customers, earning more business from existing ones, keeping them longer, making their experience simpler through digital improvements and so on. ______ leaders have long understood the importance of concentrating on customer value rather than pursuing short-term profits or quarterly earnings, and they’ve become enduring customer loyalty leaders in the process. It’s worth noting that a number of loyalty-leading companies are able to ______ shareholder pressure, or avoid it altogether, because they are founder-led, customer-owned, or not publicly traded.
Companies can ______ customer value in a variety of ways: To increase ______, enterprise software companies sometimes charge corporate customers change fees that can raise the total cost of ownership to as much as three times the original price. To reduce operating costs, restaurant chains sometimes ______ frozen and precooked ingredients in place of fresh and made-to-order food. The resulting profits may look good on the income statement. Such strategies may even lead to short-term earnings growth. But they also ______ potential customers and encourage disloyalty.
Given the importance of customer value, leaders should track it as much as they track other key assets (资产), such as buildings, machinery, and marketable securities. They also should reveal it in their quarterly and annual earnings releases so that investors can make ______ judgments about company performance and how it compares with that of industry peers. But most companies ________believe that measuring customer value is too difficult or costly. They continue to rely on a centuries-old accounting tradition that emphasizes physical and financial assets, and neither income statements nor balance sheets offer much ______ into the value of a company’s customers.
As investors wake up to the importance of customer value, however, many growth-stage companies now direct investors’ attention to ______ in growing the value of their customer base. Some public companies increasingly report various types of customer value metrics (指标). One of the UK’s top energy suppliers E.ON, ______, reports year-over-year customer counts in its financial report. “As a customer-focused company,” E.ON noted, “we see customer value as crucial to our success.”
This is a start, but because there are no customer-value reporting standards or requirements, investors still have a(n) ______ picture. The minority of companies that do provide customer value information decide for themselves what to disclose. ______, firms may calculate customer metrics differently or change them to tell a desired story, or simply stop reporting them if they fail to go with the company’s preferred narrative.

An exercise method (Gyrotonics) designed to stretch muscles and improve strength and balance is becoming popular in the United States. Here's more about Gyrotonics and the man who invented this special form of exercise.
Gyrotonics is a kind of exercise that combines the movements of dancing and swimming with the mental and physical practice called yoga. It helps lengthen muscles, improve balance, and exercise the joints, the parts of the body where bones are joined.
A Hungarian dancer named Juliu Horvath developed this special form of exercise. After he was injured in dancing, Mr. Horvath studied yoga intensely. In the 1980s, he developed a new exercise method as a special kind of yoga to strengthen dancers.
According to Mr. Horvath, his method was based on the octopus(章鱼),monkey and cat. He says these animals have no restrictions. They can move in any direction the Gyrotonic movements to help the human body move more freely.
A special machine made of wood and weights(砝码) helps guide the body through the Gyrotonics exercises. You sit or lie on a flat board. You put your legs or hands through special cloth handles attached to a line with weights. With the tension created by the weights, you must try to move through the exercises.
Seven kinds of backbone movements form the base of Gyrotonics. For example, you can stretch your back to the left and right or forward and backward. While moving your back, you can also work on arm or leg motions. These movements must be done in a smooth way. Often the motions are circular(圆形的)。
When Juliu Horvath first developed Gyrotonics, he was the only teacher. Since then, he has taught almost 70 trainers. Now, there are more then 800 official schools in the world where you can learn Gyrotonics.
1.This passage mainly focuses on _____.
A.A successful life of Horvath B.A popular kind of exercise
C.Some advice on health care D.Some uses of a special machine
2.According to the passage, what made it possible for Horvath to develop Gyrotonics?
A.His dancing-related injury. B.His failure in practicing yoga.
C.His good skills of dancing D.His wish to be a Gyrotonics trainer.
3.What do you think inspired Horvath in developing Gyrotonics?
A.His experience in dancing. B.His use of a special machine.
C. The movements of some animals. D.The ideas from many trainers.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Many Americans have improved their health through Gyrotonics.
B.In a way, Gyrotonics is an exercise that comes from yoga.
C.You only have to move your backbone when doing the exercise.
D.Gyrotonics courses can be found in most countries worldwide.
