Recently three kinds of foods are very popular in the United States.
Convenience Foods
Instead of buying only fresh foods, Americans buy many more convenience foods. These are foods which are ready partly or completely prepared. There are also many canned convenience foods, such as soups and vegetables.
Convenience foods save time and trouble. They are popular with people who are busy or who don’t like to cook or wash dishes. But they often cost more money than fresh, unprepared foods and may contain man-made additives. Also they don’t taste as good as home-cooked foods.
Health Foods
In the 1960s, a “back to-the –earth” movement was started by young people in the United States. The movement was a reaction against the harmful effects of technology. Many people now prefer natural and organic foods to the prepared foods sold in food stores.
Diet foods
These days Americans are more and more concerned with their weight. American supermarkets sell a variety of diet foods such as soft drinks, diet candy, and diet salad dressings. Each year dozens of new diets are popularized. However, some of the diet foods are unbelievable. There are tricks in their advertisements.

As life expectancy increases nowadays, the average person lives well beyond the age of retirement. As a result, the elderly make up an ever-increasing percentage of society, which makes it more important than ever for a real effort to be made in improving the lives of senior citizens.
One way to deal with the situation would be to ensure that the elderly have enough money on which to live. Obviously, when a person stops working, they still require a source of income to cover their basic needs such as food, accommodation and heating. A clear solution to the problem is for the government to make sure that the state pension is adequate for these needs.
Steps should also be taken to overcome the health problems the elderly face. The government should also provide access to the best health care available, which may necessitate paying for residential homes where the elderly can have round-the-clock nursing, or, at the very least, providing medication free of charge to all people over a certain age.
The lives of old people could be improved if attempts were made to address the problem of social isolation. If we organised trips for the elderly to community centres, visits from social workers their problem of loneliness can be reduced a lot which marks the lives of so many old people living alone and far from their families.
One final suggestion, which would help enormously, is to change the attitude of the community towards its older members, who are all too often seen as a burden on society and dismissed as having little to do with modern life. We need to be taught from an early age to respect the views of old people, and appreciate their broader experience of life. This would help society as a whole, and encourage appreciation of the role that old people can still play today.

The average person learns most of the 30 000~40 000 words whose meanings he or she recognizes by hearing them or getting familiar with them in the context or simply absorbing them without conscious effort. The best way to build a good vocabulary, therefore, is to read a great deal and to participate in a lot of good talks. There are relatively few words that we learn permanently by purposefully referring to dictionaries or keeping word lists. However, even those extra few are of value, and no one will make a mistake by working on developing a larger vocabulary. Here are some suggestions of how to do it.
Read plenty of good books. When you come across a new word, or a new meaning of an old word, stop and see if you can understand it from its context. If you can't, and if you can manage without interrupting the thought of the book too much, look it up in a dictionary or ask somebody and then repeat its meaning to yourself a couple of times. If you are really conscientious(认真的), write the word and its meaning in a personal vocabulary list - preferably using it in a sentence, or you can keep a special vocabulary notebook. Go over the list from time to time. Further, try to use a new word in writing or conversation a few times over the next several days.
Listen to good talks and be alert to new words you hear or to new meanings of words you already know. Then treat them just as you treat the new words you read.
Learn and be alert to the parts of words: prefixes, suffixes and roots. Knowing them enables you to make intelligent guesses about the meanings of words.
If you are studying a foreign language, be alert to words in that language which relate to words in English. English has inherited(继承) or borrowed much of its vocabulary of 500 000~600 000 words from Latin, Greek, French, Spanish and German.
1.When you meet a new word in reading, what should you do?
A.Guess its meaning. | B.Ask somebody. |
C.Look it up in a dictionary. | D.All of the above. |
2.According to this passage, the best way to build a good vocabulary is ______.
A.to remember a lot | B.to read a great deal |
C.to take part in a lot of good talks | D.both B and C |
3. The phrase “be alert to” in the third paragraph may best be replaced by “______”.
A.look at | B.pay attention to | C.write down | D.learn by heart |
4. In the fourth paragraph, the word “them” refers to ______
A.the parts of words | B.prefixes | C.suffixes | D.Roots |

Celebrities(名人) are more in love with themselves than the average person, according to a new study.
In case anyone needed proof, a new study supports the widely held perception:Famous people are more narcissistic(自我陶醉的),which means they are more in love with themselves than the average person is.That is the conclusion drawn by Drew Pinsky and S.Mark Young of the University of Southern California, whose study of 200 celebrities will appear in the Journal Of Research in Personality.
It is not the entertainment industry that turns stars into narcissists, the study found.Rather, it suggests, the self-adoring(自恋的)people seek jobs in show business. The study, whose subjects were a11 celebrities from Pinsky’s‘Loveline’radio show, found that reality TV stars were the most narcissistic of all celebrities.Female stars were also more likely than the male stars to exhibit narcissistic characteristics.
It’s “common sense” that celebrities are narcissists, said Jeremy Ritzlin,a longtime Hollywood psychologist who has not seen the study.“Everyone knows famous people are really in love with themselves,”he said.“So it would be natural for narcissists to be attracted toward the stage and spotlight, where other people will also think highly of them.”
Pinsky, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at USC’S Keck School of Medicine, said narcissists desire attention, are overconfident, behave strangely and lack sympathy.“However, they are easily-liked,especially on first meeting, are outgoing and perform well in public,” added Pinsky, who has hosted the radio show“Loveline”for 20 years.
Celebrity guests appearing on the program were randomly chosen to participate in the study. They anonymously(匿名地)took the Narcissistic Personality Inventory test.which rates self-love levels based on seven components:superiority, exhibitionism, entitlement, vanity, authority, exploitativeness, and self-sufficiency.
