Handwriting is quickly becoming a dying art. Few businesses can run nowadays without computers, giving keyboard shortcuts an unprecedented importance. Elementary and high schools across the country now view typing courses as essential to their curricula. But what are we losing as handwriting loses its significance in society?
Brain power, according to science. Researchers from Princeton University and the University of California, Los Angeles conducted a series of studies to demonstrate the differences between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed notes. Participants took notes on a lecture using one of the two methods and were tested on the material 30 minutes after the lecture and again a week later. The results showed that both types of notetakers did well on the first test, though longhand notetakers had a stronger grasp of the overall concept, but students with handwritten notes were able to remember and still understand the concepts of the lecture after a week had passed. These participants were also more open to understanding new ideas.
At the University of Nebraska, educational psychologist Kenneth Kiewra held a similar study, where some students were tested immediately following a PowerPoint lecture and others had a chance to review their notes before being tested. Those who took notes on a laptop had a slight advantage on the test right after the lecture, but students with written notes performed significantly better when given the chance to review. Kiewra told the Wall Street Journal that the reason is likely because written notes are briefer, more organized, and better captured information from graphs and charts than typed notes.
Computers aren’t going away anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean paper notebooks need to become obsolete(过时). In fact, it’s best to start using them at an early age. University of Indiana researchers compared brain scans of five year olds, some of whom practiced printing letters and some who just looked at the letters. Those who wrote out the letters had more enhanced and “adult-like” neural activity.
Take this as a parenting hack for the digital era: Don’t let your kids go completely digital.
1.It can be inferred from the second paragraph that ________.
A. Not both types of notetakers did well on the material test 30 minutes after the lecture.
B. It’s easy for both types of notetakers to welcome new ideas.
C. Students who wrote notes out could only remember the lecture in a week.
D. Students who typed notes could have a better understanding of the material.
2.Why students with written notes performed much better when given the chance to review according to Kiewar?
A. Because the written notes are much more convenient and accessible.
B. Because they have a higher level of intelligence than those with typed notes.
C. Because they are born adapting themselves to new ideas easily.
D. Because the typed notes are always without any references.
3.The passage mainly provides suggestions for ________.
A. students B. parents
C. schools D. enterprises

Handwriting is quickly becoming a dying art. Few businesses can run nowadays without computers. 1. Researchers from Princeton University conducted a study to demonstrate the differences between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed notes on a lecture. 2. Participants were tested on the material 30 minutes after the lecture and again a week later. And handwriting emerged as the champion.
3. The typers had a significant edge when it came to note-taking efficiency. The typers could copy down significantly many more words than the writers, sometimes even transcribing the contents of the lecture word-for-word.
But while more of the lecture's content was retained (保留) on paper when typing, it wasn’t necessarily retained in participants’ heads. 4. On the test 30 minutes after the lecture, typers and writers did more or less equally well on questions about the basic facts of the lecture, but typers fell behind when it came to more conceptual questions.
As for the later quiz, the results were similar. Students with handwritten notes were able to remember and still understand the concepts of the lecture after a week had passed. These participants were also more open to understanding new ideas. 5.
A.The tests that the participants took proved this.
B.The efficiency of handwriting might best benefit you.
C.That’s not to say that typing doesn't have its benefits.
D.In this study, the laptops were only used to take notes.
E.Generally speaking, typing also has its own disadvantages.
F.But what are we losing as handwriting loses its significance in society?
G.Clearly, writing by hand is one of the things that can make you smarter.

Craft (手工艺)is becoming a heritage industry — but a record of disappearing skills might just come in handy in the future.
Mr. Lobb (of John Lobb the bootmaker) mentioned that custom clothing and shoe-making were once the norm for everyone. How come, then, today a pair of normal Lobbs would set you back over £2,000? The price has obviously gone up because of lack of competition and higher wages, but would custom clothing once again be affordable to all if the demand was there? Do we just wave goodbye to these skills,or should we fight to maintain them?
The disposable (一次性的)culture we “enjoy” today has existed in our life for almost two generations now. We like our products to be made by either a robot or invisible, cheap hands so that we can accumulate them cheaply and frequently. The concept of “craft” is something that’s now largely considered to be strange, and seems to be limited to museums and dusty, independent shops. Hobby crafts such as knitting do undergo revivals (复兴)from time to time, but I think that’s because they are seen as short-lived fashionable leisure pursuits rather than a craft worthy of revivals on a commercially feasible (可行的)scale.
To drive a revival in any of these crafts, you would probably need to apply the same marketing techniques that are used to sell any other items today. The consumer must believe that they just have to have it. If they don't have it now, it will either go up in price or go out of fashion --- both reasons enough in themselves for a shopper to act.
But does it finally matter if these skills will no longer serve any practicable use in the decades to come? I don’t know the answer to that, but I have long thought it would be a good idea if we “banked” these skills somehow, just as we are not attempting to do with seeds. You just never know whether we’ll need them in the future. Maybe it’s time to establish a worldwide network of volunteers to record, through the written words and videos,as many of these dying skills as possible. Actually, a rough look on YouTube fills me with hope that an army of willing volunteers is probably out there already and just needs someone or something to gather them together.
1.According to the text, the custom clothing is dying in that_
A. it serves no useful purpose
B. it doesn’t meet people’s demand any more
C. it is too costly for most people to afford
D. it has long been lack of competition all along
2.What does the author really want to express about the occasional revival of hobby crafts?
A. It is a sign of disposable culture.
B. It indicates the direction of fashion.
C. It can’t help revive the traditional crafts.
D. It creates no commercial value in the long run.
3.Which of the following measures may take effect in reviving crafts?
A. Making them as affordable as possible for the foreigners.
B. Adopting modem marketing strategies used to sell other items.
C. Establishing a network of volunteers to sell them worldwide.
D. Drawing people’s attention to the videos of these crafts.
4.From the last paragraph,we know the author_.
A. shows great interest in craft
B. doesn’t want craft to disappear
C. feels sad about the disappearance of craft
D. tries to explain the reason for craft’s disappearance

There is no denying that over the years college education has been accepted without the slightest doubt. All high school graduates should go, says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more, become “better” citizens and be more responsible than those who don’t go.
But college can never work its magic for everyone. Now with half our high school graduates attending college, those unfit for the pattern are getting more. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere with each other’s experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the fierce competition for admission into graduate schools. Others find no stimulation (激励) in their studies, and consequently have to drop out, which is often encouraged by college administrators.
Some observers say the fault lies with young people themselves --- they are spoiled and expecting too much. But that’s a condemnation (谴责)of the students as a whole, and doesn’t explain all campus unhappiness. Others blame our society. Both are partly right. We have been told that young people have to go to college because our economy can’t absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds, either.
Some campus watchers suggest that college may not be the best, the proper or the only place for every young person after finishing high school. It seems that through the rosy (玫瑰的) glow of our own college experiences, we may have been looking at those surveys and statistics upside down. Perhaps college does not make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, or quick to learn things—maybe it is just the other way around. Intelligent, ambitious, happy, quick-learning people are merely those who are attracted to college in the first place. And perhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successful even without college education. This is heresy (异端邪说) to those who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But contrary evidence is beginning to pile up.
1.According to the first paragraph, ______.
A. people now no longer challenge college education

A. they are no longer motivated in their studies
B. they can start selling shoes and driving taxis
C. they compete for admission to graduate schools

A. young students who are all spoiled and expecting too much.
B. our society that can’t offer enough jobs to college graduates.
C. our society that has not enough jobs for high school graduates.

A. They prove high school graduates are smarter than college graduates.
B. They are so convincing that we think of our rosy college experiences.
