Slow Walking and Ageing
Getting old might not be something that’s yet to cross your mind. 1., so it’s something I’m sure we’d all like to control. That’s why scientists are constantly seeking out evidence that will show us what we need to do to achieve longevity.
2.. To walk 10,000 steps a day or do three brisk 10-minute walks plays an effective role in our health. But the latest research might put a spring in your step if you’re accustomed to walking at a fast pace. That’s because the speed at which people walk is a sign of how much their brains, as well as their bodies, are ageing.
According to the result of those tested, slower walkers tended to show signs of “accelerated ageing”. Their lungs, teeth and immune systems were in worse shape than those who walked faster.3.. Professor Terrie E Moffitt, has proved that a slow walk is a problem sign decades before old age.
This might be seen as a wake-up call for people with a slower gait who might feel it’s time to work out and get fitter. But it might be too late; researchers predict the walking speed of 45-year-olds using the results of intelligence, language and motor skills tests from when they were aged three.4..
So, what’s the point of knowing that a slower walking pace might mean a smaller brain? Well, researchers say measuring walking speed at a younger age, and understanding what this might mean, could be a way of testing treatments to slow human ageing.5.. Any steps we can take to prolong a good mental and physical state is a no brainer!
A.Everyone wishes to keep young
B.There are various ways to exercise
C.We all know that regular exercise is good for us
D.But ageing is unavoidably going to get the better of us one day
E.This might help us make lifestyle changes while we’re still young and healthy
F.In other words, some signs even in early life will show who will live younger and healthier
G.To add insult to injury, the result also indicates the faces of slower walkers usually look older and they have smaller brains

This activity will melt away the pounds, build your body and leave you on an emotional high. Yet the form of exercise, the fitness trend of the year, does not require gym membership or a personal trainer. All you need to do is walk.
“Walking is a refreshing alternative to complicated aerobic ( 氧) routines and overpriced gym membership,” says personal trainer Lucy Knight, author of a new book on the exercise. “It is free, enjoyable and already a part of everyday life. All you need to do is correct your technique, walk faster and for longer and you will lose weight.”
There is much evidence of the benefits of walking. Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh recently discovered that overweight people who walked briskly ( 快) for 30 to 60 minutes a day lost weight even if they didn’t change any other lifestyle habits. Another American study found that people who walked for at least four hours a week gained less weight than couch potatoes as they got older. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts medical school found that people who walked every day had 25 percent fewer colds than those who sat a lot. Best of all, walking makes you feel good about yourself. “For people suffering from depression, walking three to four times a week for 30 minutes has been shown to lift their mood,” says Knight.
But how to walk your way to weight loss and wellness? Health experts recommend that we should walk 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy. Actually you would probably need to walk at least 16,000 steps a day to lose weight. “Your workout plans depend on your level of fitness. You should aim to progress by increasing your walking time by five minutes every two weeks, and walk a bit faster. In just three months, the results should speak for themselves,” says Knight.

Imagine looking at something and being able to move it just by using your brain! That is exactly what the new technology called BrainGate can do —with the help of a robotic arm, anyway.
BrainGate is the idea of Professor John Donoghue and his team of researchers at the Brown Institute for Brain Science,USA. BrainGate is attached directly to the brain. First of all, gold wires are put into the part of the brain that controls movement. These are then connected to a small computer chip(芯片) . When the person thinks about different movements, this creates electrical signals, which are picked up by the chip. After this, the signals that are created by the brain are sent back to a computer, which changes the signals into movements. Finally, the computer uses the robotic arm to carry out these movements. BrainGate can already be used to write an e-mail or play computer games, just by brain power.
The technology has already cost millions of dollars to develop and when it is available for use,it will probably cost thousands of dollars per person. There are still many challenges ahead for Donoghue and his team. They are currently planning a mini wireless version, which will allow people to be connected to the computer at all times. Donoghue also dreams of using this technology to help disabled people who can't move their arms or legs. He plans to connect BrainGate directly to their own paralysed limbs(瘫痪的胳膊或腿) .This will mean that the person can control their own body again, without relying on a robotic arm.
This research is attracting the military's (军方的) attention as well. However,it is easy to understand why scientists might be concerned about how thought-controlled machines could be used by the military.
1.What does the underlined word “These” refer to?
A. Movements. B. Thoughts.
C. Brains D. Wires.
2.What is one of BrainGate's disadvantages?
A. It needs improvement. B. It produces few movements.
C. It is too expensive. D. It is difficult to control.
3.How will Donoghue help disabled people?
A. By developing a wireless version.
B. By replacing their limbs with robotic ones.
C. By making BrainGate smaller.
D. By attaching BrainGate to their bad limbs.
4.What does the military think of thought-controlled machines?
A. They could lead to disasters. B. They would face fierce competition.
C. They could be useful. D. They would be in mass production.
