“Beating is a sign of affection, cursing (骂)is a sign of love.”
Many may not expect to hear the words of the old Chinese saying in these modern Times—
with parents wealthier and better educated than they have ever been—but experts say they still
ring true.
Today,it seems,Chinese parents are more likely to send their children to precollege military
academies in the United States in the hope that some tough love will pave the way to success.
“Good education doesn't mean letting your children enjoy privileges, especially our boys.”
said Song Wenming,an entrepreneur (企业家)in Jinhua,East China's Zhejiang province. “They should be raised in tough conditions to know what to fight for in the future.”
In August,Song sent his 17yearold son to Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in
Pennsylvania. And he is far from alone, even though it takes a lot of money—around $48,000 per year—to send a child to a strict military school.
Statistics show that an increasing number of Chinese students have been registering with such academies.
A few years ago, there were no Chinese students at Valley Forge. Today, there are 28.“All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from wealthy families;some of them were spoiled.” said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school.
Song's only son, Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The
teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult.
Now, three months later, he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a
meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism,no matter how unreasonable.
“The training is hard but I know it is good for selfdevelopment of individuals.” said SongSiyu.
“The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character;they are not personal.”
But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy
this year have transferred to other schools.
But for those who stick to it, there is a reward for all the hard work.

The cash machine is 47 years old, but where was the birthplace of this world-beating invention? New York? Tokyo? No. The first ever cash machine was born in Enfield Town, north London. It was a Scottish inventor, John shepherd Barron, who realized the concept of a self-service machine that could be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to withdraw cash from one’s own bank account. It struck the inventor while he was in the bath. He hit upon the idea of a chocolate bar dispenser, replacing chocolate with cash.
On September 2 in 1969, America’s first automatic teller machine (ATM) appeared in public, giving out cash to customers at Chemical Bank, New York. It was only able to give out cash, but in 1971, an ATM that could handle many functions, including depositing(存款) money, was introduced. Today there are over one million ATMs around the world, with a new one added every five minutes. It is reported that Americans over the age of 18 use their ATM card six to eight times a mouth. Not surprisingly, ATMs get their busiest workouts on Fridays. In the 1990s, banks began charging fees to use ATMs, a profitable move for them and an annoying one for consumers.
Consumers were also faced with an increase in ATM crimes. Robbers preyed(抢夺) on people using money machines in poorly lit or otherwise unsafe locations, and criminals also thought up ways to steal customers’ PINs (personal identification numbers), even setting up fake money machines to capture the information. In response, city and state governments passed laws such as New York’s ATM Safety Act in 1996, which required banks to install such things as surveillance cameras (监控摄像头), reflective mirrors and locked entryways for their ATMs.
1. What does the underlined word, “It”, in the first paragraph, probably refer to?
A. The opening time of the bank.
B. The concept of an ATM.
C. Ordinary banking service.
D. The act of withdrawing cash.
2. Which of the following is true about ATM?
A. It appeared earlier than the chocolate bar dispenser.
B. It was invented by a Scottish man in 1971.
C. It was at first free of charge for its consumers.
D. It was originally designed to deposit money.
3. What can we learn from the text? "
A. Americans under the age of 18 are not allowed to have an ATM card.
B. People are more likely to turn to ATMs for banking service on Fridays.
C. Criminals usually choose unsafe locations to steal customers' PINs.
D. The ATM crime rate in New York is much lower than that in other state
4. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A. How to Operate on an ATM
B. What is Waiting for ATMs in the Future?
C. The First ATM Opened for Business
D. The Unknown Truth about ATM

Asthma(哮喘) is a long-lasting breathing disease that affects millions of Americans, many of whom are children. People who get asthma will suffer from lack of breath, difficulty in breathing or coughing--which are caused by the tightening of the muscles in airways. Untreated asthma can lead to poor lung function and death, but asthma can also be effectively controlled with proper treatments.
Research is discovering genes that contribute to the development of asthma. This development has pointed researchers to the role of indoor and outdoor pollution as environmental factors that contribute to the increased occurrence of asthma.
The Indoor Pollution
Indoor pollution has increased with the developments in building materials and in heating and air conditioning systems. In addition to poisonous gases that come from paint, other materials like dust and perfumes used in household products such as washing powder are recycled continuously through the house, winter and summer.
Unlike the days before central heating or before whole-house air conditioning, these materials and chemicals cannot get out of modern homes. Most often, they cause breathing problems in the members of the family with the least-developed autoimmune(自身免疫的) systems. Proper venting (通风) and use of environmentally-friendly building materials and carpeting can help reduce the presence of these chemicals.
The Outdoor pollution
Researchers have also established outdoor pollution's role as a probable cause of asthma. Asthma has been proven
to result from some fuel products. Smog and the small matters carried by it have been recognized as a factor which leads to asthma since the 19th century when London saw more and more diseases in the industrial population. Industrial pollutants and other chemicals which are produced in water treatment and open treated water like that found in the swimming pools also contribute to increased cases of asthma as well as other illnesses.
Those most affected by the increase of industrial and environmental pollution are children. Although much has been done to control the levels of pollution in the US, there still remains much to do as it is a worldwide phenomenon. Until an international effort can be made to limit carbon emissions, the occurrence of environmental asthma will probably continue to increase.
The 1. between asthma and air pollution
The2. of asthma | ● lack of breath ● difficulty in breathing ● coughing

Is smile just a facial expression? Of course not! It is not only used to express pleasure, affection, and friendliness, but also the commonest way to show our good will perfectly without saying anything. A Chinese saying runs:“Never hit a person who is smiling at you.” It is a time-proven fact that smile is a language all its own—a universal language—understood by the people of every nation in the world. We may not speak the same tongue as our foreign neighbors, but we smile in the same tongue. We need no interpreter for thus expressing love, happiness, or good will.
One day while shopping in a small town in southern California, it was my misfortune to be approached by a clerk whose personality conflicted with mine. He seemed quite unfriendly and not at all concerned about my intended purchase. I bought nothing, and marched angrily out of the store. On the outside stood a young man in his early twenties. His expressive brown eyes met and held mine, and in the next instant a beautiful, brilliant smile covered his face. The magic power of that smile made all bitterness within me melt, and I found the muscles in my own face happily responding. “Beautiful day, isn’t it?” I remarked, in passing. Then, obeying an impulse(冲动), I turned back. “I really owe you a debt of gratitude,” I said softly. His smile deepened, but he made no attempt to answer. A Mexican woman and two men were standing nearby. The woman stepped forward and eyed me inquiringly. “Carlos, he no speak English,” she volunteered. “You want I should tell him something?” At that moment I felt changed. Carlos’ smile had made a big person of me. My friendliness and good will toward all mankind stood ten feet tall. “Yes,” my reply was enthusiastic and sincere, “tell him I said, ‘Thank you!’’’ “Thank you?” The woman seemed slightly confused.
I gave her arm a friendly pat as I turned to leave. “Just tell him that.” I insisted. “He’ll understand, I am sure!”
Oh, what a smile can do! Although I have never seen that young man again, I shall never forget the lesson he taught me that morning. From that day on, I became smile-conscious, and I practice the art diligently, anywhere and everywhere, with everybody.
1.The writer marched angrily out of the store because________.
A. he bought nothing B. he was unlucky to meet with a rigid clerk
C. he was unfriendly D. he conflicted with the clerk in the store
2.What do you think of the woman?

A. how he used smile to solve problems
B. how hard he tried to look for the young man
C. the lesson Carols had taught him
D. how he became a big person of ten feet tall
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A. A rigid clerk. B. A powerful smile.
C. A helpful woman. D. An impressive young man.
