Being active in your local community is important because it is an essential part of living a satisfying life.
Humans by nature are social beings. We need to be around other people to feel happy, secure and safe. Hanging out with friends helps, but that isn’t quite enough. We need to be active in our local community.
Everyone benefits from a strong community. Being active within our society helps individuals feel less lonely, have a more vital and interesting life, stay healthy and feel happier. Being active within our society brings us inspiration, helps us succeed in business and helps us find our way in life.
Communities thrive﹙兴旺﹚ when people are better connected. Local economies expand, businesses succeed, education grows, support systems become more efficient, and so on.
There may be some obstacles on the way to being active in the local community. People may become disconnected from their community. It is a modern day reality that people turn to their computers for connection with others. This can be a great thing, but it can also go too far and we can become separated from our local, physical world society. Computers are usually at their best when used as a tool to accomplish tasks and not as a portal (传送门) into an online existence that controls our life. Online communities have become very real and they help millions feel more connected, but they must not take the place of our physical life community.
It is also common for people to find jobs online and to migrate to different locations around the world. This uproots﹙使人迁移他处居住﹚ us and takes us away from the local society we grew up in, forces us to make new friends and establish ourselves in a new community.
Becoming active in our community does require effort, but it’s well worth it. Understanding the importance of community and becoming more active within yours will greatly increase your quality of life.

Critical thinking is an important skill that can increase students’ ability to learn in any situation. This can be applied to traditional education, or directly in a career related role. Many teachers find it such a valuable skill that they give their students a critical thinking question every day. Developing this ability can mean the difference between “just passing a course” and “understanding the material well enough” so that what students learn from it will follow them throughout their life.
Some characteristics of a critical thinker that teachers should encourage are;
-asking questions as a reaction to something read or discussed;
-determining the “deeper meaning” of a particular passage or topic;
-providing input and opinions to topics as a direct result of analysis and research;
-reasoning in an effort to develop an argument of your own opinion.
It is important for a student to understand more than definition(定义). One way to truly understand an idea is to have hands-on practice, and to apply concepts learned in a textbook. Such “mini-examples” will interest a student and improve their understanding of a topic. This is how life-long skills can be developed.
Teachers that use critical thinking practices in the classroom can “go above and beyond” by asking questions that promote a greater comprehension of the material. Instructors should be able to challenge students and create an environment where they are analyzing material and gaining a better understanding. This will make the classroom move in a direction for learning. It can also help students to stay interested in the course material, as they always have a new concept to consider.
At the same time, students benefit greatly from developing critical thinking skills. When learned early on, these skills can be used throughout their college education. Students can understand how to consider a topic, analyze it, and discuss it from different points of view. These are skills that will benefit them when they are part of the workforce as well.

Learning how to face silence in conversation is an important skill, especially when working across cultures.
In international negotiations, experienced negotiator (谈判者) stay silent and impassive on purpose because that will make others feel uncomfortable and possibly make compromises without having to do anything. Americans especially can’t stand silence, so they often are the first to break the silence and sometimes might be at a disadvantage in negotiations.
So, what’s the best response? Set your jaw and wait it out. Don’t offer a compromise just because they are not speaking. If you have to say something, ask a direct question, such as “What’s your initial reaction to that offer?” Once a silence is getting into 45 seconds you could say, “Let’s come back to that in a minute and go on with the next part of our negotiation.”
In presentations, silence can be far more effective than dramatic passion (热情). Before starting, look at the audience and be silent for a moment because that says, “I’m in control. I know what I’m doing. I’m confident.”
A classic example was when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs launched the first iPhone. He introduced with many pauses so that you didn’t miss his key points. Because silence makes us nervous, our natural reaction is that we’d better pay attention, there’s something going on here.
Equally, when giving a speech to staff or trainees, pauses count-especially if there are negatives. If you keep talking you’re spoon feeding. Give people a moment of silence to get beyond the emotional response and to start thinking consciously and processing.
Silence can be an inward-focused thoughtful activity or an outward stillness where you give yourself the time to watch and think and listen to the world around you. Having observed the use of silence in Finland and also among the Blackfeet Nation, a North American Indian tribe in northern Montana in the US, we can see benefits far beyond wheeling and dealing.
Silence can be a very powerful point for understanding ourselves, understanding others, for developing better common understanding and more productive outcomes and that applies to business, politics, education, law, medicine, every area of human life.

A. Speaking less gives the upper hand. B. The shorter talking gaps are, the better.

B. To explain silence can be more effective.
C. To introduce how to make a presentation.

3.What is the meaning of the underlined words “spoon feeding” in Paragraph 6?
