British society is considered to be divided into three main groups of classes-the upper class, the middle class.and the lower or working class. This is known as the class system and it is important to know something about it if you mean to understand British people and society. Most British people grow up with a deep knowledge and understanding of the class system even if they are not very conscious(意识到的)of it.As a result, more people know which class they belong to and are able to tell which class other people come from by the way they speak, the kind of clothes they wear, their interests and hobbies or even the type of food they eat.
Social class is not only about behavior and attitudes. For example, although many upper class people are rich and may own a lot of land, having a lot of money does not necessarily make a person one member of the upper class. It is also important to come from a particular kind of family, have friends who are considered suitable, have been to a certain type of private school and speak with the right kind of accent. There are people who are poor but who do not think of themselves as working class because their family background, education, political opinions, etc.are basically different from those of most working-class people. Many people do not like the class system but it is impossible to pretend that these differences do not exist or that British people do not sometimes form opinions in this way.

In 1947, the province Bengal of Pakistan was divided into two parts: the western part became India and the eastern part is known as East Bengal which was later known as East Pakistan. At that time there were many economic, social and cultural problems. In 1948, when government announced Urdu as the national language, it caused the protest among the Bengali speaking majority of Pakistan. The protest got out of control and ended with the death of four protestors of the University of Dhaka who were shot by the police on 21st February, 1952. The students’ deaths during the fight for their mother language are now remembered as The International Mother Language Day (IMLD).
Each year on Feb 21, UNESCO holds the event to draw attention to the disappearance of the world’s languages: dozens of them are disappearing each year. What happens when a language dies out? Something huge is lost -- not just sounds and marks but the way that people make sense of the world and communicate with each other. And it is through language that we have culture and tradition. Kill a language and all this is killed too.
Through IMLD, more people are becoming more aware of the destruction of linguistic (语言的) diversity in modern times and trying to stop it. The Myaamia Project is a kind of effort. This is an attempt to revive (复兴) the language spoken by the Miami and Illinois tribes (部落) of the US. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which formally died out in the 1960s.
This is why we should remember the wise words of Nelson Mandela: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
1.What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.Bengal had the biggest population in Pakistan.
B.The conflict resulted from linguistic controversy.

2.What message does Paragraph 2 mean to convey?
A.Dozens of languages die out every February.
B.The world is known merely through languages.
C.Language helps to preserve and promote culture.
D.Much attention has been paid to language protection.
3.What does the Myaamia Project aim to do?
A.Keep linguistic diversity. B.Protect an American tribe.
C.Raise money to help the locals. D.Focus on native language learning.
4.Why does the author mention Mandela’s words?
A.To show his contribution to language protection.
B.To stress the difficulty in learning a dying language.
C.To reflect the possibility to preserve a local language.
D.To emphasize the importance of one’s mother tongue.

Criticism can be divided into two types. 1._____ This is the type of criticism that can be the most hurtful. Parents might express their disapproval of your choice in career, friends or lifestyle. People may criticize how you dress or the way you act. It can be terribly unpleasant to tolerate it.
The second type of criticism involves pointing out your weaknesses and mistakes. No one is perfect, yet many imperfect people seem to find it extremely easy to “let us know” when we mess up. 2. _____And the fact that they are telling us what we already know makes it much more annoying.
When people express their disapproval of some area of your life you first need to consider how you feel about it. You need to be secure in who you are and the decisions that you make.3.____
Remember that there is a difference between being firm in your choices and being stubborn. Don’t be stubborn. Be mature enough to truly hear what they are saying, even if you don’t agree with it at first. 4._____If not, just let it go and trust that they meant well, but what they were saying is not for you. Don’t be mad at them.
5._____ Improving yourself works best if you can see yourself from different angles. Other people have different views on what you are doing and can help you. If you are one of those people who just want to learn the hard way, try listening to some advice for a change. It might do you some good.
A.In many cases, we already know a lot of what people are saying to us.
B.You may come to realize that they have a good view of things and are right.
C.There is no need for you to care about others’ criticism.
D.The first type is when someone expresses their disapproval.
E.Bear in mind that you should never criticize others.
F.If your decisions are solid and you firmly believe in them, you won’t allow anyone to change your mind.

In the past three years, according to a study, the number of people who study part- time in England has decreased by 42%—the equivalent (等同的)of 106,000 fewer students. Almost half a million students were studying part-time in the past three years, with most of them working at the same time and studying vocational subjects, according to Universities UK(UUK), which conducted the research. The report, which was requested by ministers, said, ''There seems to be many factors responsible for it: the current economic climate limiting employer support for further study and putting pressure on household budgets, changing pathways to higher education and the current changes to the funding system in England and associated increase in tuition fees. Factors such as the rise of apprenticeships(学徒制),increase in private providers (whether for profit or not for profit), and a shift to online learning also have an impact. ''
Professor Sir Eric Thomas, chairman of the review and vice-president of Bristol University, said, ''The reality is that the UK needs more graduates and relies heavily on part-time higher education to meet these fast changing skill needs in a fast changing world. We ignore part-time study's transformative power for individuals and society. While part-time students are a great success story for the UK, something is going wrong. In England in particular, numbers are reducing and do not look like recovering. The situation is highly complex. This review is the beginning of a process of universities working together and with partners to take steps in dealing with this issue. We cannot and must not give up on these students. ''
Rachel Wenstone, vice-president for higher education at the National Union of Students (NUS), said, ''NUS welcomes this report and we are pleased that this issue is getting the attention it deserves. It is incredibly disheartening to see the number of part- time students decreasing. The sector took responsibility in analyzing the issues facing part-time students and it's now time for the sector to take responsibility for dealing with the problems. ''
The university's minister, David Willetts, said, Part-time study brings enormous benefits to individuals, the economy and employers. Tuition fee loans are now available to new part-time students. We will also change the rules which stop people from getting financial support to learn new skills in engineering, technology and computer science part-time. This will make sure that the nation has the skills we need to keep our businesses ahead in the global race. Institutions must also play their part to encourage more part-time study by emphasizing the benefits to future students. I am calling on all universities to make sure that part-time options are highly visible on websites and detailed information about the courses is also up to date.
1.Which of the following is NOT the reason for the decline of the number of part- time students in the UK?
A.The tuition fees have been increased.
B.Many people choose to learn on the Internet.
C.People are too busy with their work and daily lives.
D.Families are short of money to let their members study further.
2.What does Eric Thomas really want to express in Paragraph 2?
A.Part-time higher education is very important in the UK.
B.More graduates in the UK have to improve their skills.
C.Part-time students have been very successful in the UK.
D.Universities in the UK play a key role in attracting part-time students.
3.How does Wenstone feel about the present part-time study in the UK?
A.Puzzled. B.Satisfied.
C.Optimistic. D.Discouraged.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

B.Part-time students receive more attention nowadays
C.The UK comes up with ways to attract more part-time students
D.The decline of part-time students has effects on the UK
