A nurse of 78 this weekend celebrates 60 years of walking the wards - and she has no plans to retire.
Jackie Reid was 18 when she started work in 1953 - when the National Health Service (NHS) was just five years old - and is believed to be the oldest nurse in Britain.
The diabetes(糖尿病) specialist had to retire at 65 but returned as a nurse within two weeks and still does up to four seven-and-a-half hour shifts(轮班)each week.
Mrs. Reid said: "Nursing is hard if you do it correctly but I love my job. Working for the NHS has been my life. I have no other hobbies because I have worked all my life.
Jackie has worked at a number of different hospitals--including one in Scotland.
Her specialist field has been diabetes for the past 40 years. She retrained after her 12-year-old daughter Michelle developed the disease. She currently works at Southend Hospital, Essex.
Over the last 60years she has treated tens of thousands of patients.
Jackie believes nursing should be protected from government cuts. She said: "There're lots of things I would say to the government. If you are going to get good care you have to have the resources(资源), you can't do it without enough money. They shouldn't need the cuts that there are in the NHS. It's hard now because there's a shortage of staff."
Jackie has lived alone in Grays, Essex, since her husband did three years ago.
The couple have two daughters Michelle, 50, and Karen, 54.
Jackie added: "My youngest daughter worried about me - she doesn't think I should work as much as I do. I constantly say 'don't worry about me, I'm fine', but she never believes me. I don't like the thought of giving it up and will try to keep going forever."

Making friends can be difficult, especially these days with so many peer pressures. If you want to develop a more pleasing personality and make friends, become genuinely(真正地) interested in other people and show kindness. You may be wearing the latest designer label clothes, the hottest brand shoes and the coolest jewelry, but if you display sourness and selfishness you’ll have a battle ahead of you to make good friends.
Smile...smile and continue to smile. It costs nothing, enriches those who receive it, happens in a flash(闪烁)but the memory lasts forever;it creates happiness in the home and classroom. A smile can not be bought, begged or borrowed,it comes from the heart. If you want other people to like you, make the other persons feel important, and do it sincerely!
Choose your friends carefully. If others try to persuade you to smoke, take drugs, steal, gamble, fight etc...dare to say NO. Doing the wrong thing is the quickest way to lose friends, especially honest, good and upright friends.
Being mentally strong is not always easy but let me assure you that the more you practise it,the easier it becomes. Soon those who thought they were trendy will want to dress like you, talk like you and be with you because you have a personality which is different. People like being different! Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly with our eyes, sop it is often said that eyes can speak.
Do you have such a kind of experience? In a bus you may loom at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you may look at yourself up and down, to see if there is ..If nothing goes wrong, you will fell angry towards others' stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10seconds and refuses to avert his gaze, his intentions are obvious, that is ,he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is saying, to tell him that he is attentive.
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate you, you will feel disconcerted. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the honest communication, quite the contrary.
In fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words can't express.
Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.

【1】Classroom programs designed to improve elementary school students' social and emotional skills can also increase reading and math achievement, even if academic improvement is not a direct goal of the skills building, according to a study to be published this month in American Educational Research Journal.
【2】The benefit holds true for students across a range of social-economic backgrounds. In the study, "Efficacy of the Responsive Classroom Approach: Results from a Three Year, Longitudinal Randomized Controlled Trial," the researchers looked specifically at Responsive Classroom (RC), a widely-used social and emotional learning intervention(介入方式).
【3】The study is among just a handful of randomized controlled trials that have examined the effect of social and emotional learning interventions on student achievement.
【4】"We find that at the very least, supporting students' social and emotional growth in the classroom does not interfere with academic learning," said Rimm-Kaufman, professor at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education. "When teachers receive adequate levels of training and support, using practices that support students' social and emotional growth actually boosts achievement."
【5】Math and reading gains were similar among those students who qualified for free and reduced-priced lunch and those who were not.
【6】"The success of many curricula(课程)requires that teachers use effective classroom management and develop student confidence and autonomy(自主)," said Rimm-Kaufman. "Our trial of the Responsive Classroom approach suggests that teachers who take the time to foster relationships in the classroom and support children's self-control actually promote student achievement."
【7】"In a time of intense academic demands, many critics question the value of spending time on teaching social skills, building classroom relationships and supporting student autonomy," said Rimm-Kaufman. "Our research shows that time spent supporting children's social and emotional abilities can be a very wise investment."

My name is Clara. I still remember that chilly December day, sitting in science class. I’d finished a worksheet early and picked up a TIME for Kids magazine. A piece of news caught my eye: NASA was holding an essay contest to name its Mars rover(火星探测器).Before I even knew anything else about it, a single word flooded my 11-year-old mind, Curiosity.
I couldn’t want for the bell to ring so I could get started on my essay. That afternoon, I raced home, sat down at the computer, and typed until my fingers ached. “Curiosity is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone’s mind...”
Five months later, my mom received a phone call, and immediately, a wide smile spread across her face.
On August 5,2012,at 10:31 p.m, the rover named Curiosity touched down safely on the surface of Mars, and I was honored to have a front-row seat in NASA.
Curiosity is such an important part of who I am. I have always been fascinated by the stars, the planets, the sky and the universe. I remember as a little girl, my grandmother and I would sit together in the backyard for hours. She’d tell me stories and point out the stars, Grandma lived in China, thousands of miles away from my home in Kansas, but the stars kept us together even when we were apart. They were always there, yet there was so much I didn’t know about them. That’s what I love so much about space.
People often ask me why we go to faraway places like Mares. My answer is simple because we’re curious. We human beings do not just hole up in one place. We are constantly wondering and trying to find out what’s over the hill and beyond the horizon.

A new study has found evidence of aggressive behavior in children who drink four or more servings of soft drinks every day.
The mothers of 3,000 five-year-olds took part in the study. They were asked to keep a record of how many servings of soft drinks their children drank over a two-month period and keep records of how they behaved. The researchers found that 43 percent of the boys and girls drank at least one daily serving of soda.Four percent of the youngsters had four or more sodas to drink every day.
Children who drank the most soda were more than two times likely to show signs of aggression.“For the children who consumed four or more soft drinks per day,we see an association between aggressive behaviors, attention problems and withdrawn behaviors.”Shakira Suglia says. The aggressive behaviors included destroying possessions belonging to others, taking part in fights and physically attacking people.
Shakira says the researchers identified the link after they considered the factors like the child’s age and sex. They also considered ____________,such as whether the boys and girls were eating sweets or given fruit drinks on a normal day.In addition, the researchers examined parenting styles and other social conditions that might be taking place in the home.
It is not quite clear why young children who drink a lot of soda have behavior problems. However,a substance often found in soft drinks is caffeine, which helps to make people feel energetic.Doctor Suglia suggests that caffeine could be causing the children to be more aggressive.
The research is part of a larger study called the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study. It follows 5.000 poor mothers and their children in 20 American cities.

When people think of New York City, most of them probably picture the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. However, there is another side of New York City. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission trip to New York City for a week.
I had always known that poverty existed in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn't believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money.
Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them.
Every person we met on that trip had a unique story. Whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them — hope and thanks. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their futures and they were thanking us.
My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house and a lot of money, but now I see my future as helping others. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.
