For many of us, summertime means road trips to the beach or mountains, or at the very least some additional dust and bird poop on the exterior of our vehicles. The extra dirt leads us to do one of two things: wash our car in the driveway or head to the car wash. But which choice is better for the environment?
The main concerns with either choice are the amount of fresh water being used and the types of chemicals used to remove the dirt. Both of these concerns can be closely monitored when washing the car at home, says Katy Gresh, spokeswoman for the Southwest Region of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. She advises car owners to put aside a set amount of water for the entire wash. “It’s just like brushing your teeth,” she says, “You don’t want to leave the water running of more than you need for the job.” But even following this advice comes with an environmental risk: Washing your car in the driveway or street flushes the dirty water into storm drains.
John Schombert, executive director of 3 Rivers Wet Weather, his organization works to educate the public about storm sewers (下水道) and water runoff, keeping this untreated water from entering the Allegheny region’s waterways. “We ask people to, consider washing their cars on lawns or other permeable (透水的) surfaces where the water gets absorbed,” Schombert says. “Soil can break down and help filter (过滤) those things,” Schombert says. “Storm sewers are not made for waste disposal.” Even when car owners use natural soaps to wash their cars, which Schombert says are probably ineffective at breaking down grease anyway.
The commercial car wash down the street knows full well the rules regarding wastewater in storm sewers. According to the International Carwash Association (ICA), professional car washes must use water reclamation systems. These mandated processes not only keep the dirty water out of storm sewers and regular water treatment systems, but they also work to reduce water usage at commercial facilities.
1.What worries people when they have their cars washed?
A.The dirt cannot be removed easily.
B.Larger quantities of water are wasted.
C.The washing ways do no good to their cars.
D.The used chemicals are harmless to the environment.
2.What’s the disadvantage of washing cars at home?
A.It is not easy to deal with.
B.It cannot clean the dirt completely.
C.It consumes a larger amount of water.
D.It does much damage to the environment.
3.What is John’s company mainly about?
A.Purifying untreated water.
B.Helping the public protect waterways.
C.Advocating controlling soil and water loss.
D.Raising the public’s awareness of air protection.
4.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Do you put car washing at risk?
B.Which is better: Car wash or DIY?
C.Why dish washers are better than hand washing?
D.Do Americans use less water than they did years ago?

The best family vacation that ever had was going on a road trip to Myrtle Beach. The trip was for 2 weeks during the March break from school. This trip was probably about 20 years ago so it was before the time of things like portable video games and being able to watch movies in the back seat.
So to pass the many hours of travel my brother and I had to entertain ourselves and each other. My mum would set the back set up so that it was out own little playroom. She would pack everything up in the feet well so that we had a big level area to play in. We would play cards and board games.
When it got to the point that we were at each other’s throats we would be sent back to out own side of the seat and would be forced to either nap or read by ourselves until we could be friendly to each other again. I can remember us playing for quite some time when we turned the back seat into a spaceship and travelled around the earth.
Another time we turned it into a kitchen and had a bake-off(食品烘烤赛). But the thing that I remember the most and that gave us many hours of enjoyment was using each other’s faces as silly Plasticine(普萊斯蒂辛橡皮泥) and making funny faces. We would see how far we could stretch each other’s mouth open, see how thin we could make the other’s eye by pulling on it. We would keep going until one of us begged for mercy because we had to give our faces a rest.
So while I can remember us having a great time on the beach, laughing a lot trying to put the tent up in the rain, what I remember the most of that trip and what always makes me smile the most is remembering the pain that our faces would be in after the trip.
1.What did the author do when traveling to Myrtle Beach?
A. Watch movies.
B. Play video games.

A. We were fighting with each other.
B. We used up our skills.
C. We were quite out of breath.
D. We were about to fall asleep.
3.What impressed the author most during the trip?
A. Playing cards and board games.
B. Pulling each other’s faces and eyes.
C. Having a cooking competition.
D. Playing with silly Plasticine.
4.Which of the following titles would best suit the passage?
A. An Unforgettable Family Travel
B. What Is the Most Meaningful Journey
C. The Good Old Day Never to Be Forgotten
D. How to Kill Time while Traveling in the Past

For many of us, a little time with our smartphones or iPads before sleep is the highlight of the night. But would you still think it is relaxing if you knew that it damages or destroys your sleep? Scientists say that's exactly what it does.
In ancient times, when there were no lamps, telephones or smartphones, the sun was the main source of light. When the sun went down, our brains took that as a signal to start producing melatonin(褪黑素), a chemical that helps us sleep.
However, a healthy amount of melatonin can only be produced in complete darkness.Any light in your bedroom—even the one on the alarm clock or the charging indicator on your cellphone—could disturb the process, not to mention something as bright as smartphone and iPad screens. We tend to hold these much closer than a television or laptop, which allows them to shoot far more light straight into our eyes.
“This is particularly worrisome in populations such as young adults and adolescents, who already tend to be night_owls,” said researcher Brittany Wood at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.“Lack of sleep among teens is leading to depression, selfharm, low concentration and poor performance at school,” she added.
While all lights are the enemy of sleep, not all colors of light have the same effect. Our eyes are particularly sensitive to blue light, which is common during the day. Most of the light coming from electronic screens is blue light and it fools our brain into thinking it's still daytime. By contrast, orange or red light has less influence on melatonin production, because our brains recognize it as a signal that the day is ending, according to The Telegraph.
Asking yourself to keep your hands off your smartphone before bedtime might seem unreasonable, but you should at least remember to dim the screen or hold it farther away from your eyes. You could also wear a pair of orange sunglasses that take away the harmful blue light.

Many of us are quick to blame others for how we feel: “He makes me so mad!" or “She really hurt my feelings. "But did someone really" make me angry "or are we felling the anger in us getting kicked up in response to the way someone behaved towards us?
The difference between the two is in who the responsible party is for the way we feel. If we blame others for our feelings we will eventually feel reasonable at whatever our retaliation(报复)may be,and we will explain that it was their fault, not ours. "They were driving me mad”.
When we blame others for the way we feel we have in fact given power to others for the state of our emotional wellbeing(健康). The truth is,no one controls our feelings but us. If we are finding that people in our lives really know how to" push our buttons" then we are not doing a good enough job at protecting our " buttons. "We are the ones leaving our buttons out in the open so that other people can" push them. "Ultimately, the switch for our buttons is inside us-not on the outside.
While there are some things in life that are clearly out of our control, like the weather or a flight that's two hours late, how we act and respond to other people's behavior is not among them. Our responses to others are well within our control.
If someone is "making us" so mad,for example, that we get angry,we are not doing enough to learn about what drives our anger and how to properly cope with it. My suggestion is taking time before you get angry. and putting some work into taking an inventory(清单)of the past. An inventory can show you how much of your past experiences influence your feeling reactions in the current moment.
When we finally realize that so much of our present feelings and reactions are driven from within ourselves and our own past experiences,we will be ready to make the changes in our lives that will better secure our buttons so that they are no longer left out in public for everyone to push at will.
1.What result will appear if we blame others for our emotions?
A.We consider others to be correct.
B.We consider ourselves to be correct.
C.We consider we were driving ourselves mad.
D.We consider they were driving themselves mad.
2.What's the author's attitude towards feelings?
A.We should blame others for the way we feel.
B.We should enable others to control our feelings.
C.We should let others know our daily life clearly.
D.We should control personal feelings ourselves.
3.According to the author, which can always be under our control?
A.The weather conditions.
B.The delay of a flight
C.Other people's feelings.
D.Our own behavior.
4.Which proverb best suits the author's advice in Paragraph 5?
A.A burden of one's choice is not felt.
B.A friend is easier lost than found.
C.Think twice before acting.
D.A good beginning is half done.
5.What does the underlined phrase "push our buttons" probably mean in Paragraph3?
A.Force us to do a god job.
B.Make us angry.
C.Take off our buttons.
D.Let us down.

Most people like to escape the summer heat with a trip to the beach or a swim in the local pool, but here’s a better choice for you: Coudersport Ice Mine.
The mine was a roadside attraction in Pennsylvania’s Appalachian Mountains for many years until it was suddenly closed down for some reason. But after being closed for nearly a quarter of a century, this hidden summer getaway was once again open to the public in 2014, reports Living on Earth.
The mine isn’t just a great place to escape the summer heat; it’s also something of an unsolved mystery. Strangely, the cave only produces ice in the summertime, and it tends to produce more ice when the surrounding temperature gets higher. When winter falls and snow covers the hilltops, the ice in the cave melts. The cave is so mysterious that some locals even say (falsely) that the cave is man-made.
Originally discovered in 1894, the mine was first used to store meat and for ice harvesting. By the early 1900s, however, it was changed into a tourist attraction. Inside the cave in the summer it gets cold, like walking into a fridge.
Though the cave remains largely mysterious, there are theories. Experts say that cold winter air gets into the cave through cracks in the rocks, and due to the unusual interconnection of the cracks here, that cold air gets concentrated into the cave. The reason ice only forms in the summer is because of the seasonal humidity (湿度) increase in the surrounding atmosphere, along with an increase in groundwater, which becomes exposed to the freezing air. In the winter, warm air trapped in the rocks from the summer escapes and melts the ice.
Part of the charm of the Coudersort Ice Mine, though, is that it keeps much of its mystery. Perhaps it’s best to simply think of it as a long-lost hole in the mountain where Old Man Winter sleeps. At any rate, it’s a great place to escape the heat of summer. If you’re interested in checking it out, you can get more information from its Facebook page.
1.What does the history of Coudersport Ice Mine tell us?
A. It had shut down for about 35 years.
B. It had been closed down only once.
C. It used to be open only in the summer.
D. It first attracted attention a century ago.
2.What was the cave originally used for?
A. Producing heat. B. Attracting tourists.
C. Keeping food fresh. D. Storing newly harvested crops.
3.How does the cave work in the summer according to experts?
A. Its cracks trap a lot of water.
B. It produces more cracks in the rocks.
C. Its humidity increases and it gets hotter.
D. The cold air from its cracks freezes the water.
4.What does the author think of the mystery of Coudersport Ice Mine?
A. It should be kept secret forever.
B. It makes the cave more attractive.
C. It gets deeper if you are interested in it.
D. It is related to the tale of Old Man Winter.

To most of us,school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades, and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19,do whatever they want. There are no teachers—only “staff members”.The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway.“You do not need to say to a three yearold,‘Go explore your environment.'You can't stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg,a founder of the school.“But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.”
At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!
The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules.Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the fouryearolds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more.
When the school first opened in 1968,people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80%of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.
1.What is the main topic of the article?

Use old tests.
Collect your old exams from the year (or semester) and make a photocopy of each one. Write out the test answers and copy each one again.
3.
To get the best results, you should make several copies of each old exam and keep taking the tests until you score perfectly on each one.
Build up your class notes.
Organize your notes by date and make note of any missing dates/pages.
